Michelle Obama (Sort of) Speaks on Barack's Pot-Smoking Ways

Leave it to Michelle Obama to take the high road. Pun sort of intended.

While appearing on The Daily Show to promote her newest book, American Grown, the First Lady was asked about President Barack Obama's pot-smoking past.

Stewart likened Obama's youth to "the script of a Cheech and Chong movie." Not surprisingly, the Commander-in-Chief's better half had a classy response.

Michelle Obama and Jon Stewart

"He was like many young people," she said, adding that her husband changed his ways in college when "he realized he could do more with his life."

Stewart later tried to a comparison between President Obama and George W. Bush, whose past was also "out there," saying "he really related to that."

"I'm not taking any bait," Obama quickly replied, to Stewart's amusement.

The First Lady is classy and funny, ladies and gentlemen.

It is not recommended to take out a loan to begin a home business. Could your family good will be worth the financial investment? Should you take the chance of losing your home if something terrible happens?

One of the most important considerations in planning a home business is an accurate appraisal of the cost associated with starting the business. It takes less funds to begin a home business, but do not forget that there are still financial considerations. Learn how much your business costs to operate so that you can be sure to turn a profit.

As a home business owner, you should keep track of your mileage, gas consumption, and auto repairs related to your business. Being a business owner means changes to your tax status. This allows eligibility for deducting mileage and gas associated with your work. If your business involves lots of door-to-door travel, this can be a significant savings.

You should have plenty of support from those closest to you when you are trying to launch a home business. It can be hard to begin, and successfully maintain a home business. If they are not going to give you the time you need, you will find that you may be unable to succeed in running your home business.

A well-developed business plan is essential to your business success. A business plan is important to your success even if you do not have any partners, investors or start-up loans. When you have a plan, you will be able to follow the steps to get to success.

Online forums can link you up with other business owners who can help you. There are many forums for work-at-home business owners, each with their own personality and support to offer. Other business owners are more than happy to share with you things they?ve tried and whether those things have brought success. When you hit a rough spot, this information can make a big difference.

When deciding how to design your office, make sure you place things strategically to enhance your comfort and accessibility of equipment. Straining your neck to see your computer screen is extremely unhealthy, and it can even lead to permanent neck injury. When you are spending long periods of time in front of a desk, you need to invest in a good desk chair. The same holds true for all of the equipment you will use on a daily basis, such as your mouse, keyboard, overhead light fixture or desk lamp. You can start with around 200 dollars.

As was mentioned earlier in this article, a home business can be both appealing and intimidating. Hopefully you have gleaned some good information and advice from the tips shared in this article. Put that advice into action, and watch as things begin to work more smoothly for your home business.

93% Marvel's The Avengers

It's hard to think of another film in recent memory which has been subject to anything like the hype that The Avengers has enjoyed. While The Dark Knight enjoyed a huge amount of coverage in the wake of Heath Ledger's death, hype about The Avengers has increased with every Marvel adaptation, to the extent where whole sections of the more recent films felt like extended trailers for a film that didn't exist. So, after what could be called the longest marketing campaign in history, we finally have The Avengers, which sees Marvel's multitude of superheroes coming together under the guidance of Josh Whedon. The easy thing to do would be to brand the film as a disappointment that couldn't possibly live up to its hype. But the end result, while by no means perfect, is still full of pleasant surprises, with enough in the way of blockbuster fun to satisfy the fans and make the snooty naysayers reconsider. In short, The Avengers is the best we could possibly have expected from what the studio tent-pole to end all studio tent-poles. Without previous Marvel efforts hitting their targets on opening weekend, it is unlikely that we would ever have got this far. Just as you would try and get Superman or Batman right before attempting the Justice League, so The Avengers only exists because of the success of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. That doesn't mean that the film is just a cynical marketing exercise like Transformers, but it is worth understanding how we got here before we start showering it with praise. The big question that always crops up with projects like this is whether we need to have seen the previous instalments to understand or enjoy everything that happens. You could argue that this has been made mainly for the fans, but it still has to stand as a film in its own right to work for the casual viewer who may be coming to Marvel for the first time. And here there is good news, because The Avengers doesn't rely extensively on prior knowledge. There is a calculated attempt to reintroduce the Hulk, enabling the filmmakers to gloss over the shortcomings of both previous adaptations, but just enough backstory elsewhere to allow newcomers to keep up. The film has its fair share of ridiculous moments which test its internal logic. In Black Widow's opening scene, we see Scarlett Johansson go from a tied-up damsel in distress to butt-kicking champion in 30 seconds. Clearly she had all those abilities to begin with, so why not start with her beating up the henchmen? Then there are on-going problems with the Hulk. Not only have they not solved the problem about his clothes, but the transformation is inconsistent; the first time Mark Ruffalo changes, it takes ages and looks very painful, but the next time it's as simple as flicking a switch. To some extent this ridiculousness is innate within the Marvel comics, and therefore it is pointless to attack them. The level of threat the characters are exposed to is not emphasised as greatly or as seriously as it is with their DC cousins. We always feel that our heroes will get out of a tight spot with relatively little pain or mental damage, so that when Hulk falls out of the plane, our first thought is "he'll be back". Perhaps The Avengers doesn't embrace its silliness as well as Kenneth Branagh did with Thor, but in the grand scheme of things that's a relatively minor criticism. The big risk with a film this big and this expensive was that there would be no directorial voice, guiding us between set-pieces and giving us some heart in the midst of all the pyrotechnics. But Josh Whedon rises to the challenge and mostly succeeds, providing us with a series of witty scenes which give this blockbuster genuine character. All of Robert Downey Jr.'s banter is fantastic, demonstrating how well he understands the character as well as he good he is at wisecracking. His quick-fire one-liners and banter with Mark Ruffalo is not just as good as Iron Man, it's on a par with some of Eddie Murphy's work in Beverley Hills Cop. Chris Hemsworth also gets a number of peachy lines for his attractively booming voice, and his line about Loki being adopted being one of the best in the film. But the physical humour in The Avengers is also up to scratch, with the biggest belly laugh coming when Hulk throws Loki around and leaves him whimpering in a dent on the floor. At a time when the majority of mainstream blockbusters are so witlessly mechanical, it is so refreshing to find a mainstream film with a genuine sense of humour, with jokes that don't feel like they were written by a committee. Not only does The Avengers have wit, it also has quite a bit of brains. If you go in expecting Nolan-esque levels of substance, you will be disappointed - there is no Nietzschean philosophy here, nor probing questions about the rule of law and the ethics of vigilantes (at least until the end). But the film does occasionally forsake the pyrotechnics for the emotional fireworks, looking at the people who are trapped within their superhero identities and unsure of how to deal with it. The best scene by far in The Avengers is the conversation on the plane where the Avengers are all arguing about how best to recover the tesseract and prevent Loki's forces from invading the Earth. One by one the insecurities of each character are invoked or exposed, and for a few crucial seconds the masks slip and we feel for the real people underneath. The scene plays to Ruffalo and Downey Jr.'s strengths, with both having good track records for playing characters who are trying to cover insecurities. Even if the rest of the film was terrible, Whedon deserves great credit for including this scene and for allowing for it to play out so naturally. The balance between substance and spectacle has been a bone of contention among film fans for decades, and particularly among comic book movie fans. Those who go for the special effects and destruction are frequently labelled as meat-headed philistines, while those who only want the subtext and 'talking' are dismissed as being snobbish and "not real fans". In the end you need a balance of the two, something that Nolan understands only too well. Whedon also understands this, and he delivers on both as best he can, considering that the fans' expectations are incredibly high. The set-pieces in The Avengers are big and eye-popping, containing very impressive CGI effects but without necessarily justifying their need to go on for so long. The film doesn't fall into the Transformers trap of 'more is more, and loud is best', but the final battle does become repetitive. The vast majority of the performers are very strong. Mark Ruffalo slots into the Hulk role so well that we struggle to think why Ang Lee or Louis Leterrier didn't consider him for their attempts. Whedon has always had a knack for creating strong female characters, and Scarlett Johansson is given a lot more proper screen time than she got in Iron Man 2. The one weak link is Tom Hiddleston, whose Loki is every bit as wet for the most part as his character in The Deep Blue Sea. Surrounded by actors who have found their niche and perfected their characters, he looks like he's trying too hard to hold his own, and simply isn't angry or malevolent enough to be convincing. The Avengers is as good as we could possibly have hoped for, given the nature of the project and the amount of commercial success resting on its shoulders. There can be denying its silliness or bagginess, and it's not going to challenge the mantle of Christopher Nolan's Batman any time soon, whatever the fans may say. But when it is taken for what it is - a silly, lumbering blockbuster which is also witty and spectacular - it will do very nicely.

Go get yourself some: The best cheap sunglasses

By Kara Reinhardt, Cheapism.com

JiMarti sunglasses start at $13.

It?s easy enough to pick up a pair of inexpensive sunglasses at a clothing store or mall kiosk -- or even a gas station convenience store. Good sunglasses, however, are more than mere fashion accessories. Doctors warn that the same ultraviolet rays that cause skin cancer can also seriously harm your eyes, so it?s crucial to wear sunglasses with full UV protection. Features designed to eliminate glare or prevent lenses from cracking can also be found in sunglasses that don?t cost much more than the average designer knockoff.

Below are Cheapism?s top picks for affordable sunglasses.

  • JiMarti sunglasses (starting at $13) cater to outdoor enthusiasts with sleek wraparound styles and impress consumers posting reviews online with their overall quality and fit. Many models boast features such as mirrored lenses or scratch-resistant coating. All of them come with a 30-day money-back guarantee and lifetime breakage warranty. (Where to buy)
  • Sunbelt sunglasses (starting at $20) include models made specifically for children, as well as men and women. Reviewers deem the sunglasses both fashionable and comfortable, and they?re backed by a limited lifetime warranty. (Where to buy)
  • Black Flys sunglasses (starting at $17) attract repeat buyers with their style, performance, and durability. According to online reviews, consumers find them effective at shielding their eyes from the sun and screening out glare. (Where to buy)
  • Nike sunglasses (starting at $30) can certainly get expensive, but even low-end models win favor for their sporty style and superior comfort. They come in various tints designed for different activities. Some have ventilated nosepieces to keep the lenses from fogging up. (Where to buy)

All the brands on this list make their sunglasses with polycarbonate lenses, which are lightweight and won?t distort your vision. Perhaps most important, polycarbonate is far more impact-resistant than regular plastic, so you don?t have to worry so much about the lenses getting crunched when you play a sport or bury your sunglasses at the bottom of a bag. Coupled with a warranty, this durable material can help keep you from constantly having to shell out for new shades.

Read the label or product description closely. Experts recommend buying sunglasses that offer 100 percent UV protection, or close to it. You may also see lenses labeled as ?UV400,? which means the same thing (it protects against wavelengths up to 400 nanometers). If the level of UV protection is somewhat vague or you don?t see any mention of UV protection at all, it?s best to choose a different pair.

Some models made by the above brands feature polarized lenses, which filter out glare from the sun on water or snow or wet roads. An anti-reflective coating on some JiMarti sunglasses serves a similar function. The brands listed above also make sunglasses with tinted lenses. The effect of each tint goes beyond aesthetics. For example, yellow increases contrast and makes everything look more vivid but doesn?t render color accurately. Eye-care professionals often recommend a gray tint to reduce brightness without distorting colors.

Gulf Coast tourism rebounds after BP oil spill

The Gulf Coast is a hot destination again two years after the massive BP Plc oil spill made the region a tourist dead zone, with the petroleum giant pumping more than $150 million into promotions to help the region recover.

In New Orleans, about 150 miles northeast of where BP's well blew up on April 20, 2010, the period since more than 4 million barrels of oil gushed into the Gulf of Mexico has seen a frenzy of tourism efforts.

"Tourism doesn't happen on its own, it takes marketing dollars, particularly if you're battling an image crisis like the oil spill," New Orleans convention and visitor bureau spokeswoman Kelly Schultz said.

A chunk of the $15 million BP initially sent to Louisiana in June 2010 funded emergency advertising to quell misperceptions that New Orleans was laden with oil, and Schultz says it worked. Hotel tax collections in the third quarter of 2010 jumped 33 percent from year-earlier figures

Since then, BP has sent more than $150 million to Florida, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi to aid tourism, and will shell out close to $30 million more by the end of 2013. Another $82 million was committed for seafood marketing and testing, BP spokesman Craig Savage said.

It is hard to tell how effective the dollars have been.

Data from international market analyst Smith Travel Research Inc. show that occupancy in hotels within 10 miles of the Gulf Coast was 11 percent higher in the first quarter of this year as compared with the same quarter in 2010, immediately before the oil spill. Average daily hotel room rates rose 7 percent in that period.

But hotel occupancy and room rates nationwide rose by similar rates, the figures show. And along the Texas coast - where the oil spill had no direct impact and BP provided no marketing money - hotel occupancy rose 15 percent during the same period.

Howhot is it?
It is not clear whether states most affected by the oil spill still lag behind others as tourism improves nationally. "The question is really hard to answer," Smith Travel Research senior analyst Jan Freitag said.

What is clear is that visitors are returning to some places with a vengeance. Hotel occupancy in New Orleans jumped 3 percent and average room rates shot up 13 percent just in the first quarter of this year, said Freitag.

"That's a lot," he said.

    4. U.S. airlines see decline in baggage-fee revenue
    5. Fear factor: Strangest travel phobias

To the east, along the white sand shores of the Florida panhandle, Walton County tourism Director Jon Ervin is marveling over a tourism boom that has pushed hotel room tax revenue up almost 60 percent since 2010. "You go back and check your math because you can hardly believe it," he said.

Ervin said the initial funding from BP - Florida received the largest portion among the four states - helped speed the area's recovery after tar balls appeared on local beaches.

But farther south, in Fort Myers, Florida, the picture is different. Lee County tourism bureau Director Tamara Pigott said that even though oil never reached local beaches, the area took a hit.

"The phones stopped ringing after the oil spill," she said.

Her agency immediately spent $750,000 from emergency reserves on advertising to counter public misperceptions about Fort Myers resorts. An additional $500,000 arrived courtesy of BP, but Pigott said it was not enough to restore the area's previously surging business.

She said the agency now is forced to spend heavily on advertising to keep up with destinations to the north that received a much larger boost from BP.

"I don't feel we benefited from the BP advertising money," she said.

But BP's promotion continues. Unrelated to the marketing money the company has sent to coastal states, BP has funded its own "Voices from the Gulf" television, radio and social media campaign. Savage would not disclose how much BP is spending on the campaign, but he said its mission is "to promote Gulf Coast tourism and highlight what we have accomplished to date."

Consumer confidence in the economy plunged in May

(AP) ? Americans confidence in the economy fell the most in eight months as worries about the weak jobs, housing and stock markets continue to rattle them.

The Conference Board, a private research group, said on Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index now stands at 64.9, down from a revised 68.7 in April.

The May figure, which represents the biggest drop since October 2011 when the measure fell about 6 points, shows that consumers need more encouraging news before their concerns start to dissipate. Despite easing gas prices, Americans continue to be concerned about slow hiring, declining home values, big drops in the stock market and a worsening European economy that they fear will negatively impact the U.S.

"Consumers were less positive about current business and labor market conditions, and they were more pessimistic about the short-term outlook," said Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at The Conference Board.

Consumer confidence is widely watched because consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. May's figure is significantly below the 90 reading that indicates a healthy economy. The measure hasn't been near that level since December 2007. But the latest reading is still well above the 40 figure reached last October and the all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009.

The consumer confidence measure has zigzagged so far this year, dropping in January, rising in February and holding nearly steady after that. Analysts were hoping a slight rise in May would give some credence to the idea that the economy is stabilizing.

Instead, the data, which was based on a survey conducted from May 1 through May 16 with about 500 randomly selected people nationwide, suggests that "the pace of economic growth in the months ahead may moderate," said Franco, with The Conference Board.

Mark Vitner, an economist at Wells Fargo, said May's reading is disappointing, but consistent with the sluggish economic recovery so far.

"In some ways, it's a microcosm of the whole economic recovery," he said. "Every once in a while hopes are raised that things are getting better and then the bottom seems to fall out again."

Analyst say the dismal job market is what keeps Americans from being confident. Indeed, U.S. job growth remains inconsistent. Hiring picked up earlier in the year, but slowed in March and April, suggesting the economy's early-year momentum faded in early spring. Economists say a warm winter led employers to move up some hiring and accelerate other activity that normally wouldn't occur until spring.

A clearer picture of the jobs market will emerge on Friday, when May employment figures are due out. The unemployment rate is expected to remain at 8.1 percent for May with an increase of 160,000 jobs, according to FactSet. That's above April's gains but below the growth pace set this winter.

Adding to Americans' job woes, the stock market in May is on track for its worst month since last September. The S&P 500 is down 4.6 percent for the month. But on Tuesday, The stock market appeared to shrug off the report. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 110 points when the report was released at 10 a.m., and climbed 20 points higher after it came out.

That indicates investors may be more confident in the economic recovery than consumers, said John Lonski, chief economist of Moody's.

"Financial markets are giving short shrift to the drop in consumer confidence," Lonski said.

Meanwhile, recent signs that an economic slowdown is spreading beyond Europe to fast-growing countries like China has raised fears that U.S. companies could pull back on hiring as demand weakens for their products. The housing market also is still weak, and many consumers are seeing their retirement plans shrink as stock prices fall.

Conversely, shoppers are getting some relief at the gas pump. Gasoline has dropped 27 cents per gallon since early April. The national average was $3.67 per gallon as of the start of the Memorial Day weekend on Friday; some experts say it could fall as low as $3.50 by July 4.

Differences Between Adidas F30 and F10 Soccer Shoes

The upper is only similar to the F50 in terms of the colors used on the soccer shoes. It is amazingly thick for a synthetic and it seems to even have a few layers of unnecessary material. For a boot that goes from a very light 5.8 oz of the adiZero to 9.8oz of the F30. Although this cleat certainly provides a little more protection than its nicer brother, the lace of quality in a boot that still costs over $100 is a bit worrying to buyers.

The soleplate of the F30 is extremely similar to the bottom of what you would have seen on previous forms of the adiZero soccer shoes. The newest colorway release does offer miCoach compatibility on the soleplate and the small cut out of the front two studs, but the older colorway releases are the ?old? soleplate. You will also notice small grooves running down the bottom, but that is purely cosmetic and is actually found on the F30 and F10.

The F10 seems to be the boot tier of choice for sports megastores.

The upper involved with the F10 is the first tier where the lower quality starts to visually show. The upper seems to be three small pieces of synthetic stitched together, with a shiny sheen and feel that truly seems a lot like a cheap/thin plastic. Although it is amazing durable for what it is, it has the feel of what you would expect from a boot that can easily be found for under $50. No owner should be surprised, but it allows a decent touch and would be a great soccer shoes choice for young players that will outgrow their boots quickly or for beginners being introduced to the beautiful game.

The comfort is decent, and it definitely outshines the more expensive F30. The soleplate on the F10 is almost identical the F30, but the new Euro colorway is not miCoach compatible and it does not have the small divot that allows adidas to call something ?2.0.? You would notice that there is a slight difference in how the upper is cut to connect with this boot in comparison the F30, but it doesn?t seem to cause anything to feel different.

The negatives involved with the F30 and F10 soccer shoes are numerous. The price-tag should imply that this is a very high quality boot, but the F30 is the biggest disappointment. The negatives involved with F10 are nothing that you shouldn?t expect with a third tier of a boot silo. The cosmetic stitching is somewhat off-putting and you would never doubt that you are wearing a lower tier release.

RIM expects loss, plans 'significant' job cuts

RIM's CEO Thorsten Heins is silhouetted during a BlackBerry event in Orlando in early May.

By Roland Jones

Updated at 5 p.m. ET: Research in Motion, which revolutionized the mobile industry with the once-ubiquitous BlackBerry, is racing against time as it tries to launch a new line of smart phones while struggling to remain afloat.

Amid reports that the company plans to eliminate at least 2,000 jobs, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said late Tuesday that the next few quarters will be "challenging" and that the company had hired two investment banks to review its operations.

Heins also said in a?statement?that the company expects to post an operating loss for the current fiscal quarter, which ends next week. RIM shares fell sharply in after-hours trading on the news.

Heins said the company is moving ahead with plans for "significant" headcount reductions in an effort to save $1 billion in annual expenses, although he did not confirm reports tha the company plans to eliminate at least 2,000 jobs across its worldwide operations, according to some reports. RIM has about 16,500 employees worldwide.

But analysts are doubtful that the maker of the BlackBerry, a one-time darling of Canada?s technology industry, can shrink enough, or become competitive enough, to fend off the stiff challenge it faces from Apple?s iPhone and Google?s Android software.

?We maintain that the only path for RIM is to partner with someone, to be acquired, or to turn themselves into a software company, and I think that path with become very clear to the management team by the end of the year,? said Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek, who covers wireless companies.

RIM has faced declining market share and revenue in recent years as smartphone devices such as iPhones and Androids have soared ahead of BlackBerrys.

The Canadian company is pinning its recovery hopes on the launch of the Blackberry 10 -- the next-generation mobile platform that will power a suite of new smartphones that is expected to hit the market later this year.

Analysts such as Jim Moorman of S&P Capital IQ are questioning whether the launch of the new operating system will arrive too late to take back market share lost to industry heavyweights like Apple, Google and Samsung.

Moorman notes that the much-anticipated -- and delayed -- Blackberry 10 launch will come around the same time that Samsung, HTC and Apple are due to launch updated smartphones.

?This is not a good moment for [RIM] to launch a new product,? he said. ?This raises concerns for me. It?s an already delayed launch and it?s going to be coming out in the middle of some other key product launches.?

RIM faces other headwinds, Moorman notes, including a declining subscriber base. RIM has added new subscribers to its services at a healthy clip of around 4.5 million users per quarter for the last seven quarters, but that pace slipped to 2.9 million in the most recent quarter, he said.

Related: RIM to cut thousands in global restructuring -- reports

At the same time, sales of BlackBerry devices are declining, down 6.5 percent in the last fiscal year, ended March, from the year before, Moorman said. And the company is expected to soon make a third huge writedown on unsold smartphones and PlayBook tablets, analysts say.

The strengths of RIM?s BlackBerry are its long batter life and security, both of which are benefits to business travelers, Moorman notes, but he adds that other device makers are begging to chip away at RIM?s ?special sauce,? improving the batter life of their devices. And a series of high-profile global network outages for BlackBerry might have turned off some business customers.

RIM also faces perennial problems at the C-suite level, analysts say. After RIM?s co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie stepped down from their leadership roles earlier this year, a new CEO, Thorsten Heins, who was a relatively unknown executive at the company, stepped forward.

Despite the new leadership, analysts say the company faces the same old problems, including fierce competition, chronic delays on its new technology launches and a brand that has lost its standing among consumers.

?It seems the new management team is set on rebuilding the company?s brand with the BlackBerry 10 platform,? said Moorman. ?I think it will be a struggle for them. I think we?ll continue to see RIM muddle through, but it will be a tough battle.?

?I think RIM will continue to bleed for a while, unless the share price gets so cheap that they become an acquisition target, but that?s not what the company wants,? he added. ?They are probably just waiting to see how the launch of BlackBerry 10 goes.?

Anindya Ghose, an associate professor of management at New York University?s Stern School of Business, reckons RIM needs a new, visionary leader to help the company pull out of its tailspin.

?To put it bluntly, they need someone like Steve Jobs,? he said.

Ghose points to when Steve Jobs returned to Apple in the late 1990s after having been thrown out 10 years earlier. He was faced with a company with low morale, stagnant sales and little sense of direction, and instituted radical changes to turn the company around.

?You need a visionary like him,? Ghose said.

Jefferies? Misek says RIM would do well to turn their hardware business into a niche company and offer its smart phone software to other handset makers, such as Apple. At this point the likelihood of RIM being acquired by another company looks slim, he added.

?Is there value that can be found in these assets?? he asked.

?With a market cap of about $6 billion and net cash of about $2 billion, its enterprise value is $4 billion,? Misek said.

?If that?s not enticing enough for someone to buy this company I don?t know what is. Basically, if you pay a 25 percent premium, you can buy Research in Motion for $5 billion dollars right now, and that?s a very reasonable price. So it?s already cheap and it?s not attracting any buyers,? he added.
