Samsung Galaxy S III mini review: a small Galaxy with few stars

Samsung made a bold move when it announced the Galaxy S III mini. Here was an Android phone with the potential to take the iPhone 5 head-on. While the original Galaxy S III is clearly the flagship, its 4.8-inch display means it's literally too much for some people to handle. By matching Apple's screen size inch for inch, it could have been pitched as a device aimed at winning over some iOS fence-sitters. However, when you look at the specifications: a dual-core 1GHz processor, WVGA (800 x 480) display and a 5-megapixel camera, it's clear that Samsung had other ideas, opting to fish for a more mid-range customer instead.

Fast forward to the present, and it's no longer a matter of intellectual debate as to what the mini is all about: the phone is here, and on sale in much of Europe for £299 / €379. So hubris, brand appeal and pundit talk aside, is this the real-deal Galaxy S III, just for smaller hands? Or is it a budget phone simply wearing its elder sibling's tuxedo to the ball? Camera trap photo of rare cat wins prize

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? A photograph taken by Wildlife Conservation Society scientists of a little known Bolivian cat species called an oncilla has won a BBC Wildlife camera-trap photo competition.

The photo, which won the New Discoveries category, documents the first-known occurrence of this extremely rare spotted cat in Madidi National Park.

The Oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus) occurs across the Amazon and along the tropical Andes. About the size of a house cat, they are the smallest cat species of South America's lowlands. Very little is known about their life history.

WCS researchers Guido Ayala, Maria Viscarra, and Robert Wallace submitted the photo taken last July during camera trap surveys of jaguars and other wildlife living in Madidi -- considered to be among the most biodiverse protected areas on the planet.

More than 1,300 entries were submitted from around the world. The winning entry received ?1,000 (approximately $1,500), courtesy of Paramo Directional Clothing Systems and the World Land Trust.

The new record for oncilla in Madidi pushes the number of confirmed cat species in the park to six with at least two more waiting to be confirmed. Madidi National Park contains 11 percent of the world's birds, more than 200 species of mammals, almost 300 types of fish, and 12,000 plant varieties. The 19,000 square-kilometer (7,335 square mile) park is known for its array of altitudinal gradients and habitats from lowland tropical forests of the Amazon to snow-capped peaks of the High Andes.

The Greater Madidi-Tambopata Landscape Conservation Program aims to develop local capacity to conserve the landscape and mitigate a variety of threats, including road construction, logging, and agricultural expansion.

Boehner joins filibuster fight against Democrats

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Speaker John Boehner joined fellow Republicans in the Senate on Thursday in their battle to stop Democrats controlling that chamber from curbing filibusters, threatening to ignore bills the Senate sends him if Democrats have abused GOP senators' rights to slow consideration of legislation.

The threat by Boehner, R-Ohio, represents an unusual escalation across the Capitol building of a bitter partisan fight that has been brewing in the Senate for weeks. It also underscores a Republican effort to retain as much power as they can next year, when Democrats will control the White House and Senate and Republicans will lead only the House.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has said that on the first day of the new Congress in January, he may take the unusual step of using a simple majority vote to limit filibusters.

Usually it takes a two-thirds vote to change Senate rules. A simple majority would mean Democrats could change the filibuster rules without GOP support, and the threat has infuriated Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and other Republicans. Democrats will control the new Senate 55-45, including one Democratic-leaning independent.

Boehner said that Reid's threat "is clearly designed to marginalize Senate Republicans and their constituents while greasing the skids for controversial, partisan measures."

He added, "Any bill that reaches a Republican-led House based on Senate Democrats' heavy-handed power play would be dead on arrival."

Though the rules change would not occur until next year, Boehner suggested that it might poison the atmosphere even sooner, "at a time when cooperation on Capitol Hill is critical."

President Barack Obama and congressional leaders of both parties are currently bargaining over deficit-cutting measures that would avoid the so-called fiscal cliff of big tax increases and deep spending cuts scheduled to begin in January unless lawmakers find a way to avert them.

Minority parties in the Senate use filibusters ? parliamentary delays ? to slow or kill legislation. They can only be ended by 60 votes ? a margin neither party can achieve without some cooperation from the other side.

Democrats say Republicans are abusing filibusters by resorting to them too frequently, and statistics show minority Republicans have increasingly used the tactic in recent years. "It is a shame to see Speaker Boehner join Sen. McConnell's desperate attempt to double down in the status quo of Republican-led gridlock in Washington," said Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson.

Republicans say they have used filibusters more because Reid blocks them from presenting amendments. Reid, in turn, says Republicans use too much time pushing amendments that make political statements or that are designed to derail bills.

The battle has prompted numerous sharp exchanges on the Senate floor in recent days between Reid and McConnell.

Neither side has ruled out negotiating a solution to the dispute.

The release and alleged study by Melba S. Ketchum also suggests such cryptids had sex with modern human females that resulted in hairy hominin hybrids, but the scientific community is dubious about her claim.

"A team of scientists can verify that their five-year long DNA study, currently under peer-review, confirms the existence of a novel hominin hybrid species, commonly called 'Bigfoot' or 'Sasquatch,' living in North America," the release reads. "Researchers' extensive DNA sequencing suggests that the legendary Sasquatch is a human relative that arose approximately 15,000 years ago."

For her study, Ketchum obtained three "whole nuclear genomes from purported?Sasquatch?samples. The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern?Homo sapiens, but Sasquatch nuDNA is a novel, unknown hominin related to?Homo sapiens?and other primate species." (Mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA, is the DNA that resides in the cell's energy-producing structures, and is typically passed down from mothers, while nuclear DNA, nuDNA, resides in the cells' nuclei and is passed down from both parents to offspring.)

Any proof?

It's a fascinating theory.

So where's the evidence? Well, there is none. Not yet, anyway: Ketchum's research has not appeared in any peer-reviewed scientific journal, and there's no indication when that might happen. If the data are good and the science is sound, any reputable science journal would jump at the chance to be the first to publish this groundbreaking information. Until then, Ketchum has refused to let anyone else see her evidence.

Of course the?history of Bigfoot?is rife with exaggerated and premature claims about?proof of the creature's existence. For decades, various types of evidence have been offered as final, definitive proof, ranging from Bigfoot hair to blood to dead bodies. Without exception, the evidence has always been hoaxed, misidentification or inconclusive.

Because Ketchum has released no information at all about her findings (nor have they been examined by outside experts), it's impossible to evaluate the validity of her conclusions. But an important clue can be found in her statement that "Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern?Homo sapiens."

If the mitochontrial DNA is identical to?Homo sapiens?(i.e., modern humans), then this suggests one of two options. The first, endorsed by Ketchum, is that Bigfoot ancestors had sex with women about 15,000 years ago and created a half-human hybrid species currently hiding across North America. There is, however, another, simpler interpretation of such results: The samples were contaminated. Whatever the sample originally was ? Bigfoot, bear, human or something else ? it's possible that the people who collected and handled the specimens accidentally introduced their DNA into the sample, which can easily occur with something as innocent as a spit, sneeze or cough. No one outside of Ketchum's team knows how this alleged Bigfoot DNA was collected, from where or by whom. It could have been collected by the world's top forensics experts, or by a pair of amateur Bigfoot buffs with no evidence-gathering training.

Confirming it's Bigfoot

How did the team definitively determine that the samples were from a Bigfoot? Did they take a blood or saliva sample from?a living Bigfoot? If so, how did they get that close, and why didn't they simply capture it or photograph it? If the samples were found in the wild, how do they know it wasn't left by another animal ? or possibly even a hunter, hiker or camper who left human genetic material?

Previous alleged Bigfoot samples subjected to DNA analysis have been deemed "unknown" or "unidentified." However, "unknown" or "unidentified" results do not mean "Bigfoot." There are many reasons why a DNA sample might come back unknown, including that it was contaminated or too degraded by environmental conditions. Or it could simply mean that the animal it came from was not among the reference samples that the laboratory used for comparison. There is no reference sample of?Bigfoot DNA?to compare it with, so by definition, there cannot be a conclusive match.

Ketchum also issued a statementrequesting that the U.S. government immediately recognize Bigfoot as "an indigenous people and immediately protect their human and Constitutional rights against those who would see in their physical and cultural differences a 'license' to hunt, trap, or?kill them." Since no Bigfoot has ever been hunted, trapped or killed, it's not clear that the creatures ? if they exist ? require any special federal protection.

Ketchum's is not the only genetics-based project intended to find Bigfoot. Earlier this year, researchers from Oxford University and the Lausanne Museum of Zoology announced they were collecting samples of?alleged Bigfoot and Yeti hair?for genetic identification. Oxford geneticist Bryan Sykes collected materials from the public from May through September, and is currently conducting DNA analysis. Once the results are in, he plans to submit his results to a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

If Ketchum has the definitive proof she claims, the world will soon know about it, and Bigfoot will be proven once and for all. On the other hand, if the evidence never appears, or is inconclusive and flawed, the search will continue.

Serena Williams named WTA's Player of the Year

LONDON (AP) ? Serena Williams has been named the WTA's Player of the Year after winning major titles at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, and claiming gold at the London Olympics.

Williams, who has won 15 Grand Slam singles titles and four Olympic gold medals, was 48-2 over the final seven months of the season.

It is the fourth time Williams has won the award, which is voted on by international tennis media. She also was named Player of the Year in 2002, 2008 and 2009.

Only Steffi Graf (eight times) and Martina Navratilova (seven times) have won the award more than Williams.

Obesity Can Lead to Heart Disease, Stroke | Health, Fitness, Diet ...

Obesity is defined as having too much body fat. The body consists of water, fat, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. When there is too much fat, you are at higher risks for health problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

When you are obese, you magnify your risk for heart disease. When there is excess body fat it raises your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It raises your blood pressure and can lead to diabetes. In some cases for people with diabetes, they have doubled their risks for a major heart attack or stroke.

Obesity is caused by having more calories consumed, than are burned with physical activity, whether from daily activity or exercise. When there is a great deal of calories consumed, with too much saturated fat and cholesterol, the levels of cholesterol in the blood rises. This increases the risks for heart disease.

Determine If You Are Obese:

Body fat is measured by waist circumference and by body mass index. The high-risk waistline is more than 35 inches for women and more than 40 inches for men.

The body mass index assesses the body weight in comparison to the height. It is a method to measure the body?s composition in correlation to the body fat. It is calculated by taking the body weight in pounds divided by the height in inches squared then multiplying it by 703.

The National Center for Health Statistics has the following levels for mass body index calculations:

18.5 is considered underweight.

18.5 ? 24.9 is considered healthy.

25.0 to 29.9 is considered overweight. This is generally 10over the ideal body weight.

30.0 or greater is considered obese.

Extreme obesity is defined as a body mass index of 40 or greater.

Here are some suggestions to reduce or prevent obesity:

1. Add physical activity to your daily routine. Adults need to have at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity three or four times a week. Children need to have at least 60 minutes the same amount of times a week.

2. Reduce time watching television or sedentary activities including time on the computer or playing video games.

3. Create opportunities for physical activity at work as well as home.

4. Promote healthier choices of food serving five to nine servings of fruit and vegetables every day.

5. Reduce the portions of the food consumed. Avoid ?supersized? meals and value meals with larger portions.

Taking steps to avoid or reduce the chances of obesity has many benefits for everyone. The fact of living a healthy longer life is incentive to work on the weight issues leading to heart disease and other health related issues. Americans have the highest rate in the world for heart disease based on the amounts of people that are overweight.

Gabriel Aubry Arrested After Alleged Beat-Down (PHOTOS)

This one is about as ugly as the post-fight pictures. According to reports, Gabriel Aubry claims he was beaten severely by Halle Berry?s fianc?, and on top of it all, he ended up being arrested. Crafting with Kids: A Birthday Crown : Ideas for Women Home and ...

All kids want something special on their birthdays. You can make the day special by allowing them to make a birthday crown just for them to wear. It is an easy craft and kids will love it.

What You Need:

Construction paper
Scissors
Transparent tape
Marker
Glue
Glitter
Stickers

How to Make:

Choose two pieces of construction paper. Cut one of the pieces of paper into 2-inch wide strips. Line the strips end-to-end making one long band. Attach the pieces to one another using transparent tape.
Wrap the band around the child?s head so it covers his or her forehead. Mark about 2 inches beyond where the ends of the band overlap at the back of the child?s head. Cut off any excess paper beyond the mark.
Lay the band out flat on a table and decorate it.Trace six 2-inch squares on the second piece of paper. Add triangles to the top of each square to make shapes that resemble small?houses?and cut out the shapes. Tape the bottom of each shape to the inside edge of the headband so most of the squares stick out the top of the crown.
Decorate the crown by writing the child?s name on the center of the band using glue. Sprinkle glitter over the glue to make the name shimmer and shake off the excess glitter. Add stickers to the crown or draw on smiley faces using markers. Let the glue dry completely.Tape the ends of the band together.
Use two or three long pieces of tape to ensure that the crown stays together all day.

Gambling investigation prompts Tulsa AD leave

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Tulsa athletic director Ross Parmley was placed on paid leave Tuesday as the university investigates allegations that he may have been involved with an alleged bookie in Oklahoma City.

University President Steadman Upham issued a brief statement saying Parmley will be on paid administrative leave during the investigation. Upham didn't offer details about whether the allegations involved sports betting or other forms of gambling that may or may not be illegal in the state.

The 39-year-old Parmley was hired at Tulsa in January after serving three months as interim AD. He previously served as Tulsa's director of football operations and assistant athletic director for football, according to the school's athletic department website.

His lawyer, Derek Chance, said Parmley is cooperating with investigators.

Upham said the university's executive vice president, Kevan Buck, will be the acting athletic director while Parmley is on leave. A school spokesman declined further comment.

Parmley's name was linked last week to Teddy Mitchell of Oklahoma City, who is accused of running an illegal gambling operation. In recently unsealed court documents, Parmley is described as an "admitted gambler with Mitchell," who is awaiting trial in April.

Parmley has not been charged in the case, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Bob Troester. The prosecutor would not comment on whether Parmley may testify for prosecutors during Mitchell's trial.

Chance stressed that Parmley is not the focus of the investigation.

"I just want everyone to know that he is not a target or a subject of the investigation. But he has cooperated with federal authorities in the investigation of alleged gambling activities by Teddy Mitchell," Chance said.

The Oklahoma City-based attorney said he was trying to keep up with developments in the case. When asked if Parmley expected to testify at Mitchell's trial, Chance said: "Therein lies some of the struggle." He declined further comment.

The affidavit unsealed last week alleges that a check for $1,782 from Parmley, along with other funds, were deposited into one of Mitchell's account in late 2009.

Mitchell, 57, and his two sons are among nine people named in an 81-count federal indictment unsealed in September. All are accused of participating in an illegal gambling business that operated poker games, took sports wagers, used an illegal gambling website and laundered illegal gambling proceeds.

Mitchell, who prosecutors allege was the leader of the operation, has pleaded not guilty.

Authorities say Mitchell has been under investigation for more than two years as state and federal grand juries looked into the alleged criminal activity, as well as the November 2010 beating death of his wife, Julie Mitchell, whose body was found inside the couple's Oklahoma City home. Her death remains unsolved.

According to the NCAA website, the organization's rules "prohibit student-athletes, and athletics department, conference office, and NCAA national office employees from wagering on intercollegiate, amateur, and professional sports in which the association conducts championships."

Let's Face it: Most Social Media Marketing Is a Waste of Time

The social media marketing backlash has begun. Blame the unlikely team of The Onion and IBM. The former dropped a pitch-perfect takedown of socmedia ?experts? right before Thanksgiving. Then Big Blue released data that showed Facebook had almost zero effect on Black Friday sales, and Twitter actually had zero.

The one-two punch confirmed my deep suspicion that a lot of the buzzword-laden blather around social media marketing the past few years was itself a form of marketing for self-conferred experts looking to make a buck off scared blue-chip companies. That?s not to say there aren?t bright, honest people plying their trade. It?s just that I keep waiting for one of them to have a Jerry Maguire moment.

For those not familiar with the movie, Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) was a sports agent who gets tired of the dishonesty in his industry and pens a mission statement, paper copies of which he distributes to everyone else in the firm. (Hey, this was 1996.) Things don?t work out as planned, but at least he gets Renee Zellweger. If you?re a social media marketer feeling a bit Maguire-ish lately, here are some talking points:

No more buying Likes.?It was forgivable in 2009 to try to rack up as many Facebook fans as humanly possible, but now that it?s almost 2013, it?s time to acknowledge how pointless this is. That?s especially true if a consumer has to Like something in order to take part in a promotion. Sure, you get exposure when a friend of that consumer sees the Like, but the truth is, your target doesn?t necessarily like you. He or she just wants to try to win something. Therefore, the exposure that comes from that Like ? whether it?s a Sponsored Story or just an update in the Facebook Ticker ? is fraudulent. Just like in real life or in screwball comedies, you can?t trick someone into liking you. They?ll always figure it out later.

Salvaging a customer interaction on Twitter doesn?t make you Steve Jobs. We?ve all seen and heard stories of incensed customers who whine about their experience on Twitter and then get set right by a competent customer service rep on Twitter. But here?s another story for you: Over the summer, I had a horrible experience with United Airlines. I went on Twitter to complain and United never responded. The nerve! Now, here?s the funny part. If I was booking a flight and United?s price was even $10 cheaper than the next airline, I?d book with them again. That?s not because I?m a forgiving person. It?s because for me, price is my top priority in booking a flight. On the other hand, I had a wonderful interaction on Twitter this summer with Best Buy, but again, I?d drop them in a heartbeat if Amazon was selling one of its products at a lower price. The moral: Customer service via social media is great, but often irrelevant.

One final example: Back in 2005, Dell became a whipping boy for ignoring uber-whiner Jeff Jarvis, whose DellHell blog became a prime example of the pitfalls brands face if they don?t have a social media strategy. So, Dell got a bunch of social media experts to turn things around. Now the company is a model for any brand looking to set up a dialogue with customers in social media. And so how is this working out for Dell? Not so well. As The Guardian recently wrote, ?Dell is looking like the sick man of the PC business.?

You?re not a publisher. Brands aren?t publishers. Brands are advertisers. Publishers are publishers. For instance, Coca-Cola has 55 million Facebook fans and does a great job providing them with a stream of content. But, if PageLever?s research is to be believed, Coke will be lucky to reach 6% of those fans with its status updates. If it wants to reach the other 94% or so, then it has to pay. Now I ask you: What sort of publisher has to pay money to another media company to reach its own readers? In another example, IBM claims some 32,000 individual blogs and a wealth of other professional-grade content. Yet one does not simply go to IBM.com and expect to see editorial content. No matter how good it is, the reader will always suspect the goal is not truth-seeking, but the promotion of IBM. That?s fine, but it?s really advertising, not publishing.

The secret to good social media marketing: Make good products and offer good services. If you can?t trick people into ?Liking? your brand, maybe you can try to make them actually, you know, like your brand. How? Under-promise and over-deliver. Make products and offer services that are really, really good. That?s not to say you should completely forsake social media marketing communication. Every once in a while if you have something interesting to say, then by all means use Twitter or Facebook to say it. But stop posting cute pictures of puppies to win cheap Likes.

And if you?re ever at a loss, ask yourself: What would Jerry do?
