Puzzle program does 10,000-piece jigsaw in a day

It's not enough that our robots clean our rooms and cook our meals ? soon they'll do our puzzles for us, too. Andy Gallagher, a researcher at Cornell University, has made a program that can assemble extremely difficult puzzles with great speed. It sounds frivolous at first, but there are actually some interesting applications.

The puzzles this program ??or artificial intelligence (AI) ??attempts to solve are more difficult than your average jigsaw: Instead of that saw cutting in zigzags and wavy lines, it cuts straight, eliminating the shape-based cues we use to match pieces. Gallagher's program can take a 10,000 piece puzzle of a high-resolution photograph and solve it in 24 hours ? which, as puzzle lovers will tell you, is no mean feat.

Gallagher's program solves the puzzle by studying the edges of every piece and putting together the ones which have?colors that?match best. But with 10,000 pieces and a lot of data for each piece, that's a long process. So Gallagher's model uses a strategy based on how humans solve puzzles: Finding groups of pieces and building on them, then sticking the groups together. Using this technique brought the solving?time?down to a day, three times the speed?of earlier models.

This type of algorithmic problem solving isn't just for puzzles. Although the exact method can in fact be used to reassemble shredded documents, something the Pentagon is always keen on, there are also?lots of applications for medical research, which needs to consider and compare the contours of molecules and medications.

U.S. experienced second warmest May, warmest spring on record, NOAA reports

ScienceDaily (June 7, 2012) ? According to NOAA scientists, the average temperature for the contiguous U.S. during May was 64.3?F, 3.3?F above the long-term average, making it the second warmest May on record. The month's high temperatures also contributed to the warmest spring, warmest year-to-date, and warmest 12-month period the nation has experienced since recordkeeping began in 1895.

The spring season's (March-May) nationally averaged temperature was 57.1?F, 5.2?F above the 1901-2000 long-term average, surpassing the previous warmest spring (1910) by 2.0?F.

Precipitation totals across the country were mixed during May, with the nation as a whole being drier-than-average. The nationally averaged precipitation total of 2.51 inches was 0.36 inch below average. The coastal Southeast received some drought relief when Tropical Storm Beryl brought heavy rains to the region late in the month.

This monthly analysis from NOAA's National Climatic Data Center is part of the suite of climate services NOAA provides government, business and community leaders so they can make informed decisions.

U.S. climate highlights -- May

Warmer-than-average temperatures occurred across the contiguous U.S. except the Northwest in May. Twenty-six states had May temperatures ranking among their ten warmest.
Precipitation patterns across the contiguous U.S. were mixed during May. The Eastern Seaboard and Upper Midwest were wetter than average. North Carolina, South Carolina, Vermont, New Hampshire and Minnesota had May precipitation totals among their ten wettest. Dry conditions prevailed across the Mid-Mississippi River Valley, Southern Plains and the Interior West with Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Nevada and Utah having a top ten dry May.
Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall near Jacksonville, Fla., on May 28, bringing beneficial rainfall to parts of the drought-stricken Southeast. Beryl occurred on the heels of Tropical Storm Alberto, which occurred offshore the Carolinas, marking the third time on record that two tropical cyclones reached tropical storm strength during May (prior to the start of June 1 hurricane season) in the North Atlantic basin.
Ongoing drought, combined with windy conditions, created ideal wildfire conditions across the Southwest. The Whitewater-Baldy Fire complex in the Gila National Forest of western New Mexico charred over 210,000 acres by the beginning of June. It surpassed 2011's Las Conchas Fire as largest wildfire on record for the state.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, as of May 29, 37.4 percent of the contiguous U.S. experienced drought conditions, a slight decrease from 38.2 percent at the beginning of May. Drought conditions improved across the coastal Southeast, the Southern Plains, Northeast and Upper Midwest while they deteriorated for parts of the Mid-South and Southwest.

U.S. climate highlights -- spring (March-May)

The nationally averaged temperature of 57.1?F during spring was 5.2?F above the long-term average. With warmest March, third warmest April and second warmest May, spring 2012 marked the largest temperature departure from average of any season on record for the contiguous United States.
Spring was drier-than-average for the contiguous U.S. as a whole, with a national precipitation total of 7.47 inches, 0.24 inch below average.
Record and near-record warmth dominated the eastern two-thirds of the nation during spring. Thirty-one states were record warm for the season and 11 additional states had spring temperatures ranking among their ten warmest. Only Oregon and Washington had spring temperatures near normal.
Wetter-than-average conditions prevailed from the West Coast through the Northern Plains and into the Upper Midwest. Oregon was record wet and Minnesota and Washington were third wettest. The Intermountain West, Ohio Valley, and parts of the Mid-Atlantic were drier than average. Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Indiana, and Delaware had a top ten dry spring.
The U.S. Climate Extremes Index (USCEI), an index that tracks the highest and lowest 10 percent of extremes in temperature, precipitation, drought and tropical cyclones across the contiguous U.S., was a record-large 44 percent during the March-May period, over twice the average value. Extremes in warm daytime temperatures (81 percent) and warm nighttime temperatures (72 percent) covered large areas of the nation, contributing to the record high value.

Year-to-date (January-May)

The January-May months totaled the warmest such period on record for the contiguous United States, with an average temperature of 49.2?F, 5.0?F above the long-term average. Twenty-nine states, all east of the Rockies, were record warm for the five-month period and an additional 14 states had temperatures for the period among their ten warmest.
The year's first five months also brought dry conditions to much of the East. The Southwest was drier than average while wetter-than-average conditions persisted for the Pacific Northwest, Upper Midwest and the western Gulf Coast. The national precipitation total for the five-month period was nearly 1.0 inch below average.

12-month period (June 2011-May 2012)

The June 2011-May 2012 period was the warmest 12-month period of any 12 months on record for the contiguous United States. The nationally averaged temperature of 56.0?F was 3.2?F above the long-term average, surpassing the previous warmest 12-month period set last month by 0.4?F. The 12-month period encapsulated the second warmest summer, fourth warmest winter, and the warmest spring on record. Every state across the contiguous U.S. had warmer than average temperatures for the period, except Washington, which was near normal.

California High-Speed Rail Faces New Legal Challenges ? CBS ...

SACRAMENTO (KCBS) ? A pair of lawsuits have been filed by farmers in the Central Valley, as they contend that the current path of California?s high-speed rail project would severely affect their livelihoods.

The two suits were filed in Sacramento County Superior Court on Friday, one by the Merced County Farm Bureau and the other by the Madera County Farm Bureau.

KCBS? Mark Seelig Reports:

California High-Speed Rail Faces A New Legal Challenge

Anja Raudabaugh, Executive Director of the Madera County Farm Bureau, said by their calculations, the bullet train?s path would render 1,500 acres of prime farmland useless.

?For our county, agriculture is our business. So it?s as if you were going to come in and take HP or Intel out of some of the high tech counties,? she said.

Raudabaugh also called the California High-Speed Rail Authority?s Environmental Impact Report less than stellar.

Dan Richards, Chairman of the High-Speed Rail Authority, disagrees.

?Our view is that our environmental documents were sufficient and were done with thoroughness,? he said.

Despite that, Richards said he does understand the arguments by the farm bureaus.

?That?s just part of the process. We live in a very complicated state and people have lots of different opinions,? he said.

Richards said they plan to vigorously defend themselves in the suit and hope in the end, they can move along with a project that everyone can get behind.

Raudabaugh said they are not trying to be obstructionists, only doing what?s necessary to protect the interests of farmers.

Barring any type of settlement, the case is scheduled for a hearing within 30 days.

The thought occurred to me to build an anecdotal blog detailing my life knowing full it will be of little interest to anyone outside the family. Even then it may prove to be of little value to my x-wife and estranged children but at least I will have made the effort.

It was midway through the process of putting this blog together that the thought occurred to me that others might be interested in doing the same thing so I decided to add this page in the hope I might stimulate visitors to immortalize their own stories.

Just think about it.

If your great grandparents, grandparents, and parents had had the means to share their stories putting them in some sort of written or recorded form, you would not only have been given the opportunity to benefit from the wealth of their life?s experiences but would have undoubtedly gained a deeper appreciation for your ancestors as well.

Of course, nothing can be done about the fact that their stories have for the most part been forgotten but you can make sure that the ones you have to tell don?t fade away with the passage of time.

Reddick Bryan was my great-great grandfather. I began this timeline in 1999, soon after contacting Dennis Bryant, an avid Bryant/Bryan researcher from Georgia, who found Reddick in Martin County, North Carolina. The following quote was found in a letter written by Dennis to Larry Martin, a great-grandson of Reddick Bryan.

There is a small hamlet today in Martin County, North Carolina that is called Oak City. It?s in the upper end of the county near the Roanoke River. The present name only dates back to 1905, but settlers began arriving in that vicinity soon after 1700, when it was a part of Chowan Precinct. The county name of this area changed over the years to Bertie County, then Edgecombe County, then Halifax County. In 1774, the name became, and has remained, Martin County. Bryans were in the area at least by 1749. They were among the earliest settlers in present day Martin County and they acquired many acres of what is still recognized as the best land in the county.

It may not be the best use of paper, but this unique?dictionary certainly is an interesting crossover of the digital with the analog. Two London designers, Ben West and Felix Heyes, decided to create a dictionary that has, instead of 21,000 words you'd normally find inside a common desk dictionary, the first image that shows up when you Google those words.

The result is "Google,"?an enormous 1,240-page book with every word represented by an image and printed out in order. The two did it by running some scripts that would automatically search for a word, download the first image, and place it in the book's layout. They then printed that out as the hardcover edition you see, complete with marbled cover and thumb indentations for each?letter.

Theoretically, it could be done again and again with different images coming up?as the Google results shift ? but considering the copyright implications (they didn't ask the image owners or Google for permission) and the amount of work involved in exporting and binding the pages, it's unlikely the book will ever see more than a limited release.

And since they didn't edit the results for relevance or appropriateness, it's a bit of a mixed bag content-wise. West tells Creave Applications:?"I would estimate about half of the book is revolting medical photos, porn, racism or bad cartoons."?So perhaps not a good candidate for your coffee table.
