Wuyke is known throughout the student body, especially among athletes, for his upbeat and joyous demeanor.

?When I wake up and I come down here [to the athletic center] in the morning and I see all of the kids from the team waiting to go out and run and train, no matter if it?s sunny, cold, or raining, that is happiness right there for me,? explains Wuyke. He is known throughout the different teams that he trains, not just for his challenging workouts and conditioning sessions, but for his participation as well. Wuyke takes part in every workout that he gives, sometimes doing as many as three separate ?Wuyke Runs? (as they?re known) a day, each with a different team. ?I love being a leader as well as a coach,? Wuyke explains. ?Running right next to the students, feeling the same pain and burn as the students, that is my high.?

It is that combination of undaunted optimism and leadership that has endeared Mr. Wuyke to the hearts of so many Conn athletes and students. But even more unique than Wuyke?s status on campus is the path he took to get here. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Wuyke quickly became a world-class runner. At just twenty-two years old he represented Venezuela at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. The next year in 1981, Wuyke began attending the University of Alabama on a track and field scholarship, where he won numerous conference titles. One of those feats came in 1984 when he won the NCAA Division I 1000meter national championship; however, that was far from being his greatest accomplishment of the year.

In 1984, William Wuyke not only attended his second Olympic Games in Los Angeles, but he was also selected to represent his country as the Venezuelan Flag Bearer for the Opening Ceremonies, an honor typically given to a country?s best athlete.

?It was just such an honor, you know? The President of Venezuela came to my house, had breakfast with me, and then presented me with the national flag to take with me to the Olympics to represent my country.? On both trips to the Olympics, he finished as a semifinalist in the 800m. ?In the Olympics, it is so tough,? he explained. ?Everyone there trains and works so hard to get there, that they are all in great shape. It becomes much more about mental toughness and just plain luck.?

After receiving his Bachelors of Science from the University of Alabama, Wuyke remained there as Graduate Assistant Coach to the track and field team, while simultaneously receiving his master?s degree. During this time he also continued to compete internationally as a professional runner. In 1986, he set a personal record for the 800m, making him the third fastest 800m runner in the world that year. He also set a national record for Venezuela, one that still stands today, and is also the longest held national record for Men?s Track and Field in Venezuela.

Wuyke received his Master?s Degree from Alabama in 1988 and began looking for a new place to work, wanting to see more of the United States. Although he qualified for the Olympics in Seoul, Korea around that time, he chose not to compete. Originally, he interviewed for the job as the track and field coach at Connecticut College; however, the position ended up not opening up and Wuyke instead took a job in Memphis, Tennessee as the director of a large Jewish Community Recreation Center. Two years later, the track and field coaching position again opened up, and Wuyke received a phone call from then Athletic Director, Charles B. Luce, asking him to re-apply.

At first he was a little hesitant about the position, not knowing much about Division III athletics. As a world class Olympic athlete who had spent seven years coaching and participating in Division I athletics, he was skeptical about the idea. ?I didn?t know anything about Division III at the time,? he said. ?I thought to myself, what is Division III running? Are the runners missing a leg or something?? But Charles Luce convinced him to give Conn a shot. ?When I first took the job, I only planned on staying for a year,? Wuyke confesses. ?I thought, Conn College? Where the heck is that??

Mr. Wuyke?s arrival at Conn did little to calm his doubts. At the time, there was no track. Even worse, at his first Track and Field meeting of the year, only four runners showed up. When Wuyke asked where the rest of the team was, they informed him that they were the team. Not only was the track team lacking runners, they were also lacking a track. ?At the time, we had no turf or track. We got kicked out of a lot of local tracks, and had to train on the street,? Wuyke explained. Eventually, he was able to work out a system in which the team would use the track at the Coast Guard Academy, itself a very beat up dirt loop.

Not being one to back down from a challenge, Wuyke embraced Conn. Instead of leaving for a more prestigious Division I program, Wuyke took it upon himself to build a program here at Conn, quickly falling in love with the school. With the help of Charles Luce, whom the Field House is now named after and the man Wuyke describes as his ?father here in Connecticut,? he began to recruit athletes. Because of the lack of facilities, he had to rely solely on his name and prestige as an Olympic athlete to bring students into his program.

Now with a track and a new fitness center, things are much different for Mr. Wuyke. While he no longer coaches the Track and Field team, he takes pride in how much the program has grown since he first arrived twenty-two years ago. Mr. Wuyke is now in charge of running the fitness center, and overseeing the training and conditioning of many of the varsity teams during the off-season. He is also an assistant professor, teaching several health and fitness classes. While his classes aren?t as demanding as some of his varsity workouts, he does expect students to give it their all. ?If you sign up for my class, I expect you to respect it like any other class,? he tells his students. In response, he takes pride in the fact that students often tell him that, ?even though it is a one credit course, it should really be worth ten.? Despite the high intensity, ?I haven?t killed anyone yet,? he confesses.

Wuyke also leads an informal workout group that meets Tuesday and Thursday at 9AM and is open to anyone on campus. While the college doesn?t pay him for it, Wuyke enjoys helping students much more than he enjoys getting paid. Wuyke is quick to point out that it isn?t really work for him, ?I love being around the kids, getting on their level. It?s like I never really left college.? It is this mutual respect as well as his genuine excitement that makes him so loved on campus

In a study that covered 17 separate locations round Lizard Island in far North Queensland, the researchers videoed the behaviour of large reef fish, allowing them to identify the kind of habitat they most preferred and depended on.

"Like human beings, fish have strong preferences on where they like to hang out ? and it appears that they much prefer to shelter under overhanging tablecorals. This tells us quite a bit about how important these corals are to the overall structure of the reef and the large reef fish that live there," says James. "The reason for the fishes' preference is not yet clear ? but possibilities include hiding from predators such as sharks, shading themselves from ultraviolet sunlight, or lying in ambush for prey.

"The importance of this finding is that table corals are among the types most vulnerable to climate change," Prof. Bellwood explains. "In shallow waters and on the tops of reefs, they are often the main source of cover for these big fish.

"If they die back as a result of bleaching or disease, or are destroyed by storm surges, this would strip the reef of one of its main attractions, from a coral trout's viewpoint."

The researchers also proved that it isn't the coral, so much as the shelter that is important to big fish, by deploying artificial shelters made from plastic in the lagoon.

"We made one sort with no roof, one with a translucent roof and one with a roof painted black. Far and away the fish preferred to shelter under the black roof, which suggests they either want to hide or else to avoid direct sunlight," James says.

While the team is planning further experiments to clarify the reasons for the fishes' shelter preferences, their early findings may provide a useful insight to reef managers, about the importance of trying to maintain a range of structures and shelters as climate change bears down on the Great Barrier Reef, including the highly susceptible tabular corals.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) ? Pakistan's Supreme Court charged the embattled prime minister with contempt of court on Monday for his refusal to re-open old corruption cases against the head of his political party, President Asif Ali Zardari.

If convicted, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani could be forced to step down and face up to six months in jail. The case, which has raised tension between Pakistan's civilian leaders and the Supreme Court, could drag on and paralyze decision-making.

Local television channels flashed the news less than half an hour after Gilani arrived at the courthouse. He pleaded not guilty.

The civilian-judicial confrontation stems from thousands of old corruption cases thrown out in 2007 by an amnesty law passed under former military president Pervez Musharraf.

Zardari is its most prominent beneficiary and the main target of the court, which voided the law in 2009 and ordered the re-opening of cases accusing the president of money laundering using Swiss bank accounts.

Gilani and his advisers have refused to ask the Swiss to reopen the cases. The prime minister had appealed against the court's decision to charge him with contempt, but on Friday that appeal was dismissed, paving the way for today's indictment.

"The prime minister's actions reek of protecting the president over our system of democracy," the Express Tribune said in an editorial.

"Even if the president's immunity is upheld, it will no longer be applicable once he is out of office and in that eventuality there may be no legal or constitutional hitch in preventing the Supreme Court from going ahead on this issue."

It was a view widely held by many other newspapers and analysts, who largely hail the Supreme Court's actions as a badly needed advance for the rule of law and accountability in Pakistan, where corruption tops the list of most opinion polls as the country's biggest problem.

LOS ANGELES — Foster the People don't want to reveal too much about their performance at Sunday's 54th Grammy Awards, where they'll share the stage with the surviving members of the Beach Boys (together for the first time in more than 20 years) and Maroon 5. But they will tell you what song they won't be playing: their signature hit, "Pumped Up Kicks."

"I think my head would explode if [the Beach Boys] were playing 'Pumped Up Kicks' with us," frontman Mark Foster told MTV News during Grammy rehearsals Thursday. "I would probably have to say 'No, no, no. That's unacceptable.' No, we're going to be playing with them."

Both FTP and Maroon 5 will honor the reunited Boys — Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and early member David Marks — by singing a medley of their classics, before teaming up with the surf (and psych) legends for a triumphant final take on the seminal "Good Vibrations." And though all three bands have been rehearsing the performance for two days now, Foster is still having a difficult time believing it's actually happening.

"We walked into the rehearsal room and met all of the Beach Boys for the first time yesterday, and it was a trip for all of us," he said. "We grew up listening to their music since we were little kids — I probably wouldn't be in music today if it wasn't for them. So, to see them all in the same room together, and then playing with them, it's wild. It's a dream come true."

So much so that, in a year that saw FTP not only score a certified smash with "Kicks," but tour the world and earn a pair of Grammy nominations, Sunday's performance unquestionably will be the highlight of their young career.

"I think out of everything we've done so far, this is the top for us. This is the icing on the cake," Foster explained. "We were talking about it yesterday: Exactly a year ago, we were playing in front of 250 people in L.A., and so much has changed since then. It's all kind of a blur looking back on it, but we were reflecting on it yesterday ... our album came out five, six months ago, and now we're playing with the Beach Boys at the Grammys. Things have changed pretty quickly."

So, win or lose on Grammy night (and, for the record, Foster seems to think his band is going to get creamed in both the Best Alternative Music Album and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance categories), Foster the People are going to be just fine. After all, they're playing with the freaking Beach Boys. And it doesn't get much better than that.

"I think people that are tuning in are going to see a piece of history. This is the first time the Beach Boys have played together in over 20 years," Foster said. "They're one of the best bands of all time. Brian Wilson has left such a mark on musical history, to be able to see him up there with the other guys doing what they do, it's amazing."

The "force" was still with George Lucas, as the first part in the six-episode fantasy series racked up $1.1 million in midnight showings on Friday.

The film, considered the weakest by fans of the franchise, is nevertheless on track to have a strong weekend. It debuted in 1,300 screens in its late night showings and will expand to 2,655 locations.

"The Phantom Menace" will likely fall short of the more than $30 million generated by the 3D re-release of "The Lion King" last fall, but it should gross north of $20 million over the weekend.

Also showing some muscle, and appealing to slightly different chromosomes, was "The Vow." The romantic drama grossed $700,000 in midnight shows.

Starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, the Sony film should generate over $30 million this weekend.

Not to be outdone, Denzel Washington's latest thriller "Safe House" debuted at midnight to a solid $543,000 at 1,034 locations. It too should find itself north of the $20 million mark when the weekend ends.

A few more weekends like this and last winter's horrific box office slump will seem like it took place in a galaxy far, far away.

Argentina condemns British "militarization" in Falklands (Reuters)

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) ? Argentina's president on Tuesday accused Britain of "militarizing the South Atlantic" and vowed to complain to the United Nations as tension rises ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Falklands war.

Britain and Argentina went to war over the disputed British-ruled Falkland Islands in 1982, and London rejects Argentine demands for sovereignty negotiations unless the roughly 3,000 islanders want talks to be held.

"They're militarizing the South Atlantic once again," President Cristina Fernandez said in a speech at the presidential palace, criticizing the deployment of British destroyer HMS Dauntless in the area in the coming months.

"If there's one thing we're going to preserve, besides our natural resources, is a region where peace prevails," she said, adding that the Foreign Ministry would present a formal complaint to the U.N. Security Council and General Assembly.

She also criticized Prince William's posting as a military search-and-rescue pilot in the islands, called Las Malvinas in Spanish: "We would have liked to see him dressed as a civilian, not with a military uniform," she said.

A war of words between the two governments has escalated in recent months.

Fernandez, a fiery former senator who started her political career in the Patagonian region closest to the islands, has described Britain as a "crass colonial power in decline." British Prime Minister David Cameron hit back by accusing Argentina of colonialism.

Oil exploration by British companies off the islands has raised the stakes over the sovereignty dispute.

Three decades on, memories of the war remain painful in Argentina, where most people see the decision by Argentina to land in the islands on April 2, 1982 as a mistake by the discredited military dictatorship ruling at the time.

Fernandez also signed a decree on Tuesday to declassify a military report that was commissioned in the aftermath of the 10-week conflict in which about 650 Argentine and 255 British troops were killed.

Nepal's vulture "restaurants" for endangered birds (Reuters)

PITHAULI, Nepal (Reuters) ? In the village of Pithauli, surrounded by ripening mustard fields, a woman hauls a cow carcass on a trolley, drops it in an open field, then runs and hides in a nearby hut as dozens of vultures swoop down.

In under half an hour, the carcass has been reduced to picked bones by the dun-colored birds, occasionally squabbling as they feed.

The site is one of a handful of vulture "restaurants" opened to save the birds, which help keep the environment clean by disposing of carrion, from extinction -- and at the same time help impoverished villages become self-sufficient.

A drug called diclofenac, used for treating inflammation in cattle, causes kidney failure and death in vultures which feed on their carcasses. As a result, two species of vulture -- the White-rumped and Slender-billed -- are now critically endangered in Nepal, as well as in Pakistan and India.

"If the situation continues the two species will be extinct in ten years," said Hem Sagar Baral, chief of the Nepalese Ornithological Union.

"We may maintain certain minimum numbers but we'll never see the numbers we had 20 years ago."

Two decades ago there were about 50,000 nesting pairs of the two vulture species in Nepal. Now, barely 500 pairs remain.

Their steep decline is blamed on the widespread use of diclofenac, which was banned in 2006, and loss of habitat, with the kapok trees they use for nesting vanishing fast to meet demand from factories producing match sticks and plywood.

Five years ago, Bird Conservation Nepal came up with the idea of "restaurants" as places where the birds could feed on safe carcasses.

Pithauli, some 100 km (60 miles) southwest of the Nepali capital of Kathmandu, was the site of the first such feeding station, which now number six around the country.

The number of nesting pairs there has grown to 46 compared with just 17 before the feeding site was opened five years ago, said Dhan Bahadur Chaudhary, who coordinates the project.

"When we started I had no idea how it would do. I am happy that we have come to this point," he said.

Baral agreed that the "eateries" and the ban on the drug had helped, with numbers stabilizing after an initial rise, but noted that they still remain under threat.

For one thing, the ban on diclofenac use is being flouted by giving cattle a version of the drug intended for humans, meaning it is still taking its toll on the birds.

In addition, despite the vulture's positive depiction in Hindu mythology as fighting to free Sita, wife of the god-king Rama, from the clutches of a demon, the birds are widely reviled as ugly and the harbingers of bad luck.

SUPERSTITION AND SUCCESS

Residents in Pithauli, a village of more than 6,000 people, tell how villagers carried out special "purification" rites when vultures perched on the roofs of their homes.

When an old villager died a few days after a vulture had alighted on his house, it was widely believed to have resulted from his failure to perform the proper ritual.

But in an effort to win over the villagers, the organization that started the feeding stations provides training in income-generating activities such as beekeeping, trail and bridge construction, and tourist guide services.

They also give support to schools and public health offices.

"Initially, it was not easy. But the villagers started to support us gradually as we launched community activities for the local people," Chaudhary said.

Authorities have also set up a vulture breeding centre in the Chitwan National Park in the neighboring jungle resort of Kasara, where 60 birds, captured in the wild, are being raised. Ultimately, they plan to release chicks into the wild.

The vulture restaurant has become a tourist attraction in the poverty-stricken village, and admission fees from visitors -- who last year numbered some 2,000 -- help support it.

Additional help comes from authorities who buy old and sick cattle from the villagers for $3 a head, a modest income. These animals are kept on a farm in a community-run forest and offered to the birds when they die naturally since killing a cow is illegal in deeply Hindu Nepal.

Despite the gains, though, some villagers remain skeptical.

"Why save a bird that feeds on dead animals?" said 34-year-old Chet Nath Gandell, noting that the birds sometimes leave parts of the carcasses unfinished.

"Stinking carrion pollutes the air and we are forced to breathe in a slow poison."

The officials also said that around 50 former regime insiders held at Tora would be dispersed to five different jails in the greater Cairo area within the next 48 hours. They include Mubarak's two sons, businessman Alaa and one-time heir apparent Gamal, two former prime ministers and the former speakers of parliament's two chambers.

The decision to move Mubarak and spread the regime officials appeared to be a concession by the military to pro-reform activists who complain that the ruling generals led by Mubarak's defense minister for 20 years were treating the ousted leader with reverence and turning a blind eye to former regime officials clustered in Tora to use supporters to undermine security.
