Chrysler's Jeep brand is the latest company to fall prey to Twitter hackers.
The @Jeep Twitter feed was defaced on Tuesday, its profile image replaced with that of the Cadillac logo, while its background photo was switched to a car bearing the McDonald's logo.
The hackers subsequently posted messages to the @Jeep feed, telling the brand's 106,000 followers that it was purchased by Cadillac because employees were caught taking pain pills in the bathroom, among other things.
The feed said the hack was perpetrated by Twitter users @LILINTERNET, @DFNTSC, and @GUHTI_. But @LILINTERNET today denied hacking @Jeep, blaming @GUHTI_ for the hack. "I DID HOWEVER LOL AND LOL AND LOL AND LOL AND LOL. THANK U," @LILINTERNET wrote.
Tweets on the @DFNTSC account are currently protected; the @GUHTI_ feed has been suspended.
By this afternoon, the Jeep profile feed and background image returned to normal and the offending tweets had been deleted. But about an hour ago, two reply tweets (one directed at @GUHTI_) that appeared to come from the hackers appeared on the feed.
A spokeswoman for Chrysler, which owns the Jeep brand, said "we are aware of it and working to quickly resolve the issue."
The hack comes shortly after the @BurgerKing feed was also attacked this weekend. The fast food chain's profile picture was replaced with that of rival McDonald's, which the hackers claimed had purchased Burger King. The company later apologized, and McDonald's even chimed in to say it played no role in the hack.
