Obama Gains Reputation As Distant In Washington

nytimes.com:

Mr. Obama, in general, does not go out of his way to play the glad-handing, ego-stroking presidential role. While he does sometimes offer a ride on Air Force One to a senator or member of Congress, more often than not, he keeps Congress and official Washington at arm's length, spending his down time with a small -- and shrinking -- inner circle of aides and old friends.

Colorado asks DEA to reclassify pot

>>> personal relationship with the cannabis plant. for me, cannabis , it was love at first sight . i knew intuitively it wasn't an evil plant. it felt good. it felt right.

>> illicit love, it's a beautiful thing. you can call steve d'angelo a modern day medicine man working in the perilous gray area between federal law and state law . he and many others are part of the growing medical marijuana industry which is estimated to be worth nearly $2 billion just this year. along with his brother steve , he runs harborside health center in oakland. 94,000 registered patients this this business. they are the largest legal retailer of cannabis on the planet, and they are the subject of a controversial new reality show . joining us now, steve dang low, the executive director of the harborside health center and his brother andrew , harborside's general manager. they are two of the stars of discovery's newest shows, "weed wars," debuting tomorrow night at 10:00 p.m . what message do you hope to carry? why would you do this show? obviously it creates a little -- a little more risk potentially for you. more people looking at you. why do this?

>> we think the american people deserve to see for themselves the world of medical cannabis , and i've always believed that if they had an opportunity to see my staff, our patients and how we handle the medicine that we would support what we're doing.

>> there's a perception that this is a recreational drug that is being -- that people are trying to pass off as a medical thing and that that raises a certain amount of skepticism among a lot of folks. they say, listen, marijuana is a recreational drug . it is not a medical thing. how do you respond to that?

>> well, i think when the audience tunes in to "we'd wars" on discovery channel , they are going to see a completely different impression. they are going to see people that are really sick. you can go on the discovery website right now and meet a couple dozen of our patients that are very, very sick and need this medicine. i've got glaucoma. i'm going to go blind, so there are legitimate medical needs and people are just -- one of the reasons we did this show is to break that stigma.

>> go ahead.

>> yeah, exactly. you know, the reason that we did that show was to let americans see for themselves who are the people that are using medical cannabis and what are they using it for, and we invited discovery to come in and embed with us for a full year. they had an opportunity to film all of our patients, and you'll see a really great cross-section of exactly who is using cannabis , the reasons they are using it and what it does for them.

>> am i being presumptuous in suggesting that you guys would be in favor of legalization?

>> yes, you would. you know, i don't believe that any psychoactive substance should be used for recreation. if you want recreation, read a book, take a walk, play a game of basketball. i do believe that adult americans should be able to use cannabis for health and wellness purposes though.

>> so you would -- you think that the recreational -- the legalization of marijuana as a recreational drug is a very different debate than the use of marijuana as a medicine for specific treatment, is that correct?

>> absolutely.

>> and your goal is to draw the distinction between those who are suffering in the prohibition of recreational use that is preventing them from gaining legitimate access to the medicinal use.

>> exactly.

>> do i have it?

>> we couldn't have said it better ourselves.

>> i want to show everybody a little bit more of the show. take a look at this.

>> california law says that there's a medical reason that people use marijuana. federal law says that marijuana is illegal at all times for all purposes. that's the conflict. federal law , as any first year law student knows, is supreme over state law . anybody that owns a commercial marijuana store in california would be the subject of a federal search warrant at any moment.

>> what -- what ultimately -- in other words, are you trying to humanize this? what is it that you're trying to show?

>> we're trying to show people that cannabis can be distributed to patients who legitimately need it in a way that brings benefits to communities and not harms. in addition to helping our 94,000 patients, we've also created 80 well-paying jobs in the city of observe land and another 40 in the city of san jose , and last year we generated over $3 million in tax revenue, and we're one of oakland's top ten taxpayers so the benefits flow through the whole community.

>> at the same time, how hats current administration been under president obama relative to helping to make that distinction or either encouraging the distinction between medical marijuana and -- and non- medical marijuana ?

>> well, you know, unfortunately, even though the president campaigned on a promise to respect state medical cannabis laws and even after shortly after taking office he issued a memo saying that they would respect that promise, shortly after several states actually implemented laws to regulate cannabis , the justice department changed their mind, and now is saying that they are going to try and close down licensed regulated distribution of medical cannabis .

>> they have an all-out war on us right now. we have treasury department , the irs, the justice department , even atf is sending letters to gun dealers saying don't sell guns to medical marijuana patients who are the last people in the world who probably will buy a gun, you know.

>> go ahead.

>> but, you know, the question is why does the federal government think this is a good policy? 77% of americans support the right of patients to get access to medical cannabis . should they get it in a place that's licensed and regulated, that has laboratory tested medicine, like harborside, or should they go out on the street and get it from street dealers? which is better?

>> here we are, new york city , one of the great cities of the world, and someone with glaucoma like me has nowhere to go for medical cannabis . they have to get it from the street or drug cartels .

>> there's obviously different consortiums around this. one consists of a variety of former south american leaders along with richard branson and a few other folks who have been very aggressive in arguing that drug relationships in general between the state and people is a public health issue more than it is a criminal issue, that we have determined that drug utilization is a crime issue. we have a lot of people in prison around marijuana and we have a lot of people working inside law enforcement outside of our country to try to pursue it, and yet it is showing little or no basic result in terms of reducing consumption, if that is what the objective was. i'm not sure that that was the objective honestly, but if it was that it didn't work. on the flip side , efforts to control drug usage period has been much more effective when it's viewed as a public health issue with engagement in the communities and helping people find, again, alternate recreation in their lives, if you will, which is a public health issue just as sure as drug dependency is which might clear the space for this other conversation. do you get this sense outside the federal government that the people of this country are more prepared for that type of a conversation?

>> well, that's why we're willing to take the risk that we're taking by doing this show, because we're confident that our fellow citizens, once they understand what it is that we're doing, are going to support us and stand up for us .

>> like my brother said, 77% of americans in a recent cbs news poll supports safe access to medical cannabis . the federal government , once again, like in your previous two segments, is way behind, way behind the people, way behind.

>> i mean, there's a conversation for another day just on the federal government 's ability in general to actually understand the intent and desire of the people. which goes to money and politics and a whole other -- i'll get you really worked up.

>> there's no mystery about that, because in california 67% of the people voted in favor of prop 215 .

>> which was what?

>> that was california 's medical can that business initiative.

>> okay.

>> and in 16 other states either legislatures or the people through direct initiative have approved medical cannabis so there's no doubt about had you at least the citizens --

>> the intention of that community?

>> exactly.

>> that's right. just today on the cover of the " usa today ," we learned that 16% of all veterans returning from war from ptsd. the v.a. is overwhelmed by them. they don't know what to do. harborside health center gives 15% discounts to v.a. veterans and medical cannabis has been report by the veterans to help them a lot with ptsd.

>> in fact, one of the few agencies of the federal government that respects medical cannabis is the v.a. which in some cases allows veterans to use it in their hospitals.

>> a pleasure to meet two of you. all the best with the show. i -- i certainly am with the 67%, if you can't tell, and i -- i suspect that the way it will push you further down the road, although what happens between here and there is anybody's guess. gentlemen, all the best

Switched On: The Year of Reversal

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Back in 2005, Switched On dubbed its first full year of existence "The Year of the Switch" as IBM sold its PC business to Lenovo, Apple announced plans to leave the PowerPC platform for Macs and Microsoft moved to PowerPC processors for the XBox 360. But the dramatic reversals we saw in 2011 made even some of those decisions look tame by comparison.

Tahoma High graduate Chris Powers earns All-America honors at Eastern Washington for second straight year | Football

Tahoma High graduate Chris Powers was one of three Eastern Washington University football players to earn All-America honors this week.

Senior center?Powers, who was named to the All-America second team, finished his career with 35 starts -- the third-most among all Eastern players on offense -- in the 36 games he played as an Eagle.

In winning All-America honors as a junior in 2010, he represents the 17th time an EWU offensive lineman has earned All-America accolades in the last 18 years (1993-2010). He was a first team All-Big Sky selection in both 2010 and 2011, and Powers represents the 19th and 20th times an EWU offensive lineman has been honored on that squad since 1993.

In 2011 he started all eight games he played, and the Eagles led the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision with an average of 368.5 passing yards per game. Eastern was also seventh overall in total offense (447.4) and 27th in scoring (32.4). He was a 15-game starter in 2010 when EWU ranked 22nd in the FCS in total offense (397.1 yards per game), as well as rankings of 26th in passing (241.0), 49th in rushing (156.1) and 18th in scoring (31.5). As a 12-game starter in his sophomore season, he helped Eastern rank in the top 10 in four offensive categories in FCS, including passing (3rd, 321.3), total offense (4th, 462.2) and scoring (8th, 33.7).

Cancer Drugs Help Combat Antibiotic Resistance: Study

The study, led by Gerry Wright, scientific director of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research at McMaster University revealed that certain proteins that cause antibiotic resistance are structurally related to proteins vital in cancer.

"Our study found that certain proteins, called kinases, that confer antibiotic resistance are structurally related to proteins important in cancer," said Wright.

"The pharmaceutical sector has made a big investment in targeting these proteins, so there are a lot of compounds and drugs out there that, although they were designed to overcome cancer, they can in fact be looked at with fresh eyes and maybe repurposed to address the problem of antibiotic resistance," he noted.

The large-scale study involved screening 14 antibiotic resistant molecules against 80 chemically diverse protein kinase inhibitors.

Antibiotic resistance is a problem growing in global scope, as more viruses have overcome currently available antibiotics.

"As a result, new drugs and antibiotic strategies are urgently needed to fill the gap in infectious disease control," Wright stated.

Wright also said that he hopes future studies in combination therapies will provide new insight into antibiotic resistance.

"One of the challenges facing the drug discovery community is the lack of new chemical scaffolds with antibiotic activity," he said.

"This has led to the open question of whether all easily implementable antibiotic chemical scaffolds have already been exploited over the last 50 years: the so-called ''low hanging fruit''," he added.

The study has been published in Chemistry and Biology.

US mom, 2 daughters die in Mexico attacks

Three U.S. citizens traveling to spend the holidays with their relatives were among those killed in a spree of shooting attacks on buses in northern Mexico, authorities from both countries said Friday.

A group of five gunmen attacked three buses in Mexico's Gulf coast state of Veracruz on Thursday, killing a total of seven passengers in what authorities said appeared to be a violent robbery spree.

The Americans killed were a mother and her two daughters who were returning to visit relatives in the region, known as the Huasteca, said an official in the neighboring state of Hidalgo, where the mother was born.

Hidalgo state regional assistant secretary Jorge Rocha identified the dead U.S. mother as Maria Sanchez Hernandez, 39, of Fort Worth, Texas, and the daughters as Karla, 19, and Cristina, 13. Rocha said all three held dual U.S.-Mexican citizenship. A 14-year-old Mexican nephew traveling with the three was also killed.

A U.S. Embassy official confirmed the women's nationalities, but could offer no information on their ages or hometowns. The official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name, said consular authorities were offering assistance to the victims' relatives.

While funeral plans were unclear, Rocha said Sanchez Hernandez's mother wants her daughter to be buried in Mexico.

Three other Mexican citizens were killed in the Thursday attacks on the three buses.

The five gunmen who allegedly carried out the attacks were later killed by soldiers.

Earlier in their spree, the gunmen shot to death three people and killed a fourth with grenade in the nearby town of El Higo, Veracruz.

'Exercise caution'
On Thursday, the U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros, a Mexican border city north of where the attacks occurred, said in a statement that "several vehicles," including the buses, were attacked, but did not specify what the other vehicles were.

The consulate urged Americans to "exercise caution" when traveling in Veracruz, and "avoid intercity road travel at night."

While the specific area where the Thursday attacks occurred is not frequented by foreign travelers, other parts of the Huasteca ? a hilly, verdant area on the Gulf coast ? are popular among Mexican tourists and some foreigners.

The attack occurred near the border with the state of Tamaulipas, an area that has been the scene of bloody battles between the Zetas and Gulf drug cartels.

Meanwhile, the tortured bodies of 10 people were found in northern Veracruz, local media reported Friday, as attacks in the region intensify between the rival cartels.

In September, 35 bodies were dumped along a downtown highway in the Veracruz city of Boca del Rio.

More than 45,000 people have been killed in cartel-related violence since President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Blackberry Messenger, WhatsApp and Apple iMessage Cannibalizing SMS Revenues

By: Ian Mansfield |

Year-over-year smartphone penetration doubled to reach 21 percent of wireless subscriptions by Q3 2011. ?Smartphones have stimulated healthy increases in non-SMS data revenues that continue to lift operator performance despite declining voice and static SMS markets, says Strategy Analytics.

"Over last 12 months, while wireless ARPU fell eight percent and voice ARPU declined 13-14 percent, data ARPU increased by more than five percent," noted Phil Kendall, Director Wireless Operator Strategies, and author of the report. "Non-SMS services -- which have become the real driver of growth -- increased from 55 percent of data revenues in Q3 2010 to 61 percent in Q3 2011."

"Regionally, non-SMS data revenues grew to 54 percent of total data in Western Europe and 72 percent in North America," Kendall added.

"Smartphones for existing wireless customers are a principal source of ARPU uplift which operators cannot afford to ignore. Tapping into the next wave of smartphone adoption through lower cost devices and entry-level data plans will be crucial to medium-term operator revenue growth."

Sue Rudd, Director of Service Provider Analysis at Strategy Analytics, pointed out, "Unfortunately smartphones are not a panacea and are accelerating the decline in SMS revenues as Over-The-Top (OTT) messaging platforms, such as Blackberry Messenger, WhatsApp and Apple iMessage, dramatically increase. As a result, SMS ARPU fell in all regions. Many operators face a tricky balancing act as they seek price points for data plans that are low enough to stimulate demand but high enough to compensate for SMS cannibalization."

Japan is the most technologically advanced nation on the Planet Earth. This is thanks to the Capsule Corporation, a trillion dollar a month company that made the Briefs family and all of their shareholders into billionaires. The secret of their riches was the ability to pack any item into a capsule that could be deployed at any time. Everything from a car to a toy could be released, and in the centuries since the company was founded, almost everything can fit into one little capsule. While originally based in West City, it had moved to Hercule City and made it a booming metropolis. Hercule City, Japan was the new capital of the world.

Just outside this city stood a small wooden hut. It was a crude structure, and held no running water, indoor plumbing, or electricity. It only held one lone occupant, a young warrior named Ryukyu Taizan. The 13-year-old boy opened his eyes, shielding them from the early morning sun. It was 5:00 AM, and he had only an hour to get ready. Getting out of bed, he proceeded to get ready.

After doing his business in the surrounding wilderness, he bathed in a small pond not far from there. He could hear the rush of the river, which was where he fetched his drinking and cooking water and washed his clothes. When he wanted to eat, he hunted in the woods, captured, cooked, and then ate his prey. It was a life that most people in the world would find barbaric, but it suited Taizan just fine. He was a descendant of the Ainu, an early people in Japan who had lived just like this before being chased into the mountains of Hokkaido by the early Japanese. Thanks to the Capsule Corporation, the language barrier between the Ainu and the Japanese had been broken, and his people became modernized.

But his father had clung to the old ways, knowing that someone would have to carry on the culture and traditions of the Ainu. Taizan was the result of the union between an Ainu man and a Japanese woman, and though he was only half-Japanese, he would never admit to his Ainu heritage. It was simply a way to protect what little culture was left. Given that he looked Japanese and could speak the language at a native level, most would not question his ethnicity. Even so, Taizan preferred to live apart from them. The forest around Hercule City was his home, now and forever.

There was one other thing that separated Taizan from other Japanese boys his age. He had learned how to use his Ki, his body's natural energy, and it augmented his strength, speed, and agility. Taizan had discovered it by accident, after it came out toward the end of a particularly exhausting training regimen. Two blasts had knocked holes in his ceiling, and he had spent the rest of the evening patching them. Taizan spent almost all of his time training his body and Ki. The reason for this was rooted in his past.

When Taizan was six years old, aliens attacked the Planet Earth. They had focused their attack mainly on Hercule City, but a stray bolt from one of their ship's cannons blew apart his structure. The explosion killed his parents and left him buried under rubble. The military, with the help of the Capsule Corporation, had chased off the aliens by the time Taizan dug himself out. But, that day changed everything for him. He was grief-stricken, and vowed to someday get revenge on the aliens that robbed him of his parents.

Taizan developed what most would call an unhealthy fixation on training and the martial arts. He would exercise for hours on end, often training until he passed out. He would punch and kick at a wooden wall until his knuckles bled and his legs were bruised and calloused. It all had a positive result, as he had a bodybuilder's physique at age thirteen. After he discovered his Ki, he did research at the Hercule City Library and discovered ways to increase it and practice it. His research also revealed information on the Namekian Z-Fighter, Piccolo.

Piccolo was a loner and had a rough early life. Taizan latched on to this and made him his idol. As a show of admiration, his first ever technique, the Mouth Blast, was based on one of Piccolo's techniques. He was still working on building up callouses in his throat, so that when he used it, it did not hurt or make his throat bleed. All of this energy usage caught the eye of a man named Hinoki. He came to visit him one day, and told him that he was the Grandmaster of a school in Hercule City called the Z-Academy.

The school was meant to cater to warriors like him, who had learned to use Ki. Hinoki had been impressed with Taizan's work ethic and aptitude, and offered him a place at the Z-Academy. Taizan was not sure that he wanted to go, but today was Orientation Day, and if it was anything like what Hinoki had said, then he definitely needed to train there. After getting dressed in black weighted Kung Fu shoes, white pants, and a blue tunic, he set off for Hercule City. He arrived there in about ten minutes, and then went to the address Grandmaster Hinoki gave him. Taizan was awestruck by what he saw.

The building was huge and topped with a dome. It was connected to other buildings, and looked like a city unto itself. Taizan entered and became uneasy when he heard the buzz of voices. He followed them to the auditorium, where hundreds of teens like him were seated. After finding a seat away from everybody else, he sat down. On the stage in front of him was a podium, where he guessed the speaker that everyone seemed to waiting for would appear.

Taizan wanted to center himself, so he closed his eyes. He was a fiend for meditation, and when not physically training, eating, or sleeping, he could always be found in one of two stages. His first was just to center himself and focus his being into one point, such as when he wanted to listen very closely to a speaker or feel at one with nature. His other stage was when he was trying to break the chains of limitation on his Ki through intense focus, or when he was trying to gather his Ki into a certain body part, like his elbow joint. The first stage helped him block out the noise, and he felt better. Now was the time to wait for the speakers, and decide if the Z-Academy was right for him.

Defending the genome

Thursday, December 22, 2011

Small, mobile sequences of DNA left over from viruses, called transposons or "jumping genes" because of their ability to move around the genome, pose a significant threat to the genetic integrity and stability of an organism. Considered genetic parasites, these transposable elements are believed to comprise as much as 50 percent of the human genome. Because of the damage transposons can do to an organism's DNA, an immune-like response has evolved to turn off, or silence, these mobile genetic elements.

New research published in the journal Cell by the labs of William E. Theurkauf and Zhiping Weng at the University of Massachusetts Medical School sheds light on how the genome defends itself from these invading DNA parasites.

While it's known that specific small RNAs called Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are responsible for silencing transposons, how this biologically critical system reacts to the introduction of a new transposon isn't fully understood. "The genome is littered with these transposons," said William E. Theurkauf, PhD, professor of molecular medicine at UMass Medical School and lead author of the study. "In Drosophila there are over 120 different forms of transposons and these are the active pathogen that we are looking at in this host-pathogen response. Meanwhile, piRNAs are produced from regions of the genome that contain bits and pieces of these transposons, and are the foundation for how these elements get silenced."

To understand how a genome responds to the introduction of a new transposon, Theurkauf and colleagues turned to a wild Drosophila, or fruit flies. Unlike standard lab-bred fruit flies, wild Drosophila contain a transposon called the P element that first began appearing in the population after scientists started breeding fruit flies to study genetic heredity in the early part of the 20th century. As a result, lab-bred fruit flies lack the P element transposon and the maternally inherited piRNA necessary to silence it. When these lab-bred females are crossed with the P element-carrying wild fruit flies, the off-spring are unable to silence the invading transposon and are sterile as a result.

Jaspreet Khurana, a PhD student in Theurkauf's lab, made the keen observation that as these flies aged the hybrids were gaining fertility. "Based on the observation that the flies recovered, it seemed likely that they were learning how to shut down transposons. We decided to use this system to look at the process of adaptation to a new transposable element," said Theurkauf.

Using a multi-disciplinary approach that included next generation sequencing, Theurkauf and colleagues were able to get complete genetic sequences of the sterile, hybrid flies at various stages of development. Jie Wang, PhD, a postdoc in the lab of Zhiping Weng, PhD, professor and director of the Program in Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology at UMass Medical School, analyzed the genetic information to see how the genome was responding to the introduction of the new transposon.

What they found was startling. In the hybrid off spring, the new transposon had triggered a response that disrupted the entire piRNA machinery. Not only was the newly introduced transposon jumping around the genome and causing a problem ? which was expected ? but most of the 120 plus transposons in the Drosophila genome had also become active. "This massive destabilization of the genome is probably why they're sterile," said Theurkauf.

As the hybrids aged, however, the new transposon and all the existing, resident transposons, got shut down and fertility was restored. "We found there were two mechanisms responsible for silencing the transposons," said Weng. "For P elements it turned out the flies learned to process the piRNA transcripts inherited from the father and turn them into mature piRNAs and silence the transposon. Resident transposons, by contrast, jump into piRNA clusters and alter the architecture in a way that makes new piRNAs that can silence the resident elements."

"The bottom line on our study is when you introduce a single, new transposon it leads to a genetic crisis that activates all the transposons in the genome and compromises fertility in these hybrids," said Theurkauf. "Remarkably, what emerges at the other end is an organism with an altered genome architecture that functionally recharges the piRNA clusters so they more effectively silence transposons."

Move over, Magneto (The Newsroom)

Amir Hekmati. (Courtesy of his family)

The family members of an Iranian-American man being held in Iran as an alleged spy said Tuesday they are shocked by the accusations, which they said are untrue.

Amir Hekmati, 28, a former U.S. Marine linguist from Flint, Michigan, was given permission by the Iran interests section in Washington, D.C. to travel to Iran to visit his elderly grandparents and relatives there, his family said in a statement emailed to journalists covering the case Tuesday.

Hekmati entered Iran on August 14th, and was detained more than two weeks later.

"The Iranian government detained Amir on August 29, 2011 without any charges, and urged our family to remain silent with the promise of an eventual release," the family said in the statement. They have not heard from him directly in 100 days.

But on Sunday, Iranian television broadcast a video of Hekmati allegedly "confessing" to having been a CIA agent sent to infiltrate Iran.

Hekmati's family said Tuesday the charges are outrageous and untrue.

Amir's family was "shocked by the recent broadcast aired on Iranian TV with false information and a forced confessions," the statement said. "Amir has never had any affiliation with the CIA, and these allegations are untrue."

Amir's family "hopes that this misunderstanding can be resolved peacefully with Iran, and that Amir can be reunited with his family and friends in the US who miss him dearly, and are praying for his safe return," the statement said.

The family--Amir's father Ali Hekmati works as a professor of biology at a community college in Flint, Michigan--said in the statement that Hekmati served in the U.S. Marines from 2001 until 2005.

Another former U.S. Marine, Jared Bystrom, told Yahoo News Tuesday that he and Hekmati had been posted by the Marines to the defense language school in Monterey, California in 2001. Hekmati had studied Arabic, Bystrom said. Hekmati later served as a linguist in Iraq.

Lawsuit: Patient got HIV from Miss. cancer clinic (AP)

JACKSON, Miss. ? A Mississippi cancer clinic doctor who is charged with using old syringes and watered-down chemotherapy drugs now faces a lawsuit that claims a patient contracted HIV from a dirty needle.

Dr. Meera Sachdeva, founder of Rose Cancer Center in Summit, has been held without bond since her arrest in August on charges of diluting drugs and billing Medicaid and Medicare for more chemotherapy than patients actually were given.

The lawsuit claims James Ralph Patterson Sr. went to the now-shuttered clinic for treatment of his brain and lung cancer but ended up getting watered-down drugs and was infected with HIV by an old needle. Patterson died July 3 at the age of 61.

The lawsuit appears to be the first public allegation filed in court that a Rose patient contracted HIV.

Iran says its delayed news of US drone capture

(AP) ? Iran deliberately delayed its announcement that it had captured an American surveillance drone to test U.S. reaction, the country's foreign minister said Saturday.

Ali Akbar Salehi said Tehran finally went public with its possession of the RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone to disprove contradictory statements from U.S. officials.

Iran, which put the aircraft on display last week, has tried to trumpet the downing of the drone as a feat of Iran's military in a complicated technological and intelligence battle with the U.S. Tehran also has rejected a formal U.S. request to return the plane, calling it's incursion an "invasion" and a "hostile act."

"When our armed forces nicely brought down the stealth American surveillance drone, we didn't announce it for several days to see what the other party (U.S.) says and to test their reaction," Salehi told the official IRNA news agency. "Days after Americans made contradictory statements, our friends at the armed forces put this drone on display."

Salehi said Iran's position is not to return the drone, but he didn't completely rule out the possibility of a deal.

"Any decision-making about this issue rests with the Supreme National Security Council," IRNA quoted Salehi as saying. The council is Iran's highest security decision-making body and handles the country's talks with the West over Iran's disputed nuclear program.

Salehi said Iran won a complicated technological battle with the U.S. by intercepting and taking control of the plane with an electronic ambush.

"Regardless of whether the U.S. believes it or not, the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran brought down the aircraft largely intact without assistance from any foreign country," he said.

American officials have said that U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that Iran neither shot the drone down, nor used electronic or cybertechnology to force it from the sky. They contend the drone malfunctioned.

Iranian state media has said the unmanned spy aircraft was detected over the eastern town of Kashmar, some 140 miles (225 kilometers) from the border with Afghanistan.

Networked Politics ? Blog Archive ? What Is Disability Insurance?

Some folks could also be surprised to be taught that disability insurance coverage is every bit as necessary as life insurance. Many times it can be even more essential than life insurance. This article examines among the issues regarding incapacity insurance coverage and how it can help shield your life-style within the occasion of a serious illness or injury.

Incapacity insurance coverage is used for the protection of your future income. It?s the best way to guard your self in the occasion that you?re unable to earn a dwelling on account of poor health or serious injury. As with most kinds of insurance coverage, disability insurance comes in totally different forms.

One of many reasons that incapacity insurance is considered to be simply as essential as life insurance is the truth that you?re still alive when incapacity insurance coverage takes effect. Life insurance, in fact, only takes effect as soon as you are passed on. Life insurance coverage will deliver a sum of cash to your beneficiaries that they can use as they see fit. If you are injured or in poor health to the point that you simply can?t work and earn a residing, the place will the money come from to satisfy your financial obligations?

In a really broad sense, incapacity insurance can are available three ways. Your employer could have you lined through a gaggle plan at work. The Social Security Administration might be able to present some aid if you happen to meet their requirements. Lastly, you can purchase private disability insurance coverage from an insurance coverage provider the identical manner that your purchase life insurance.

An fascinating reality concerning disability comes from the Social Security Administration. Their research declare that a 20-12 months old working individual has a 3 in 10 chance of being disabled earlier than reaching retirement age. In response to their numbers, 30% of the populace is susceptible to needing some type of earnings protection inside their lifetime. That may be a staggering quantity if you consider it.

While incapacity insurance is essential it is usually more expensive than life insurance. This solely makes sense as it?s expected that the insurance coverage firm must pay out more in incapacity claims than it?ll in life insurance coverage claims.

Consumers should understand that disability insurance coverage will not be the same as health insurance, which is used to help pay the price of medical expenses. It?s somewhat ironic that medical insurance can save your life and enhance your health but you may still end up homeless if you?re disabled and can?t earn a living. Incapacity insurance coverage protects you from that disagreeable reality.

People who?re single or have no members of the family usually decide to by-go life insurance coverage as a result of they have nobody to profit from the insurance. In other words, they don?t have any beneficiaries. Those same people, nonetheless, should not by-move incapacity insurance coverage as a result of, in essence, they?re the ones who will benefit ought to they turn out to be disabled and unable to work. It solely makes sense that even single people who find themselves unable to earn a residing will still want some type of monetary assistance in order to live.

Anybody who is dependent on their revenue to pay their payments should significantly consider adding disability insurance to their monetary planning portfolio.

First Person: A Merry Christmas on a Tight Budget (ContributorNetwork)

*Note: This was written by a Yahoo! contributor. Do you have a personal finance story that you'd like to share? Sign up with the Yahoo! Contributor Network to start publishing your own finance articles.

This Christmas, my family has a much smaller budget than in previous years. I have a total of $1,000 dollars to work with. This amount includes presents for family, friends, and travel. It's definitely going to be tight but I have a budget worked out that I think will allow me to fit everything in.

Decorations

Instead of buying everything new this year, we are having a Christmas party with my children's friends and making our decorations. I'm using old decorations, ribbon, pine cones, strings of lights, and pretty much anything I can find that's been used or given to me to make something new. I'm spending a grand total of $10 on glue, new hooks, and glitter.

Travel

We always fly to Palm Springs, California for Christmas to spend time with our family, but the prices for plane tickets are ridiculous. Instead of cutting travel from our holiday budget this year, we are just flying with a discount airline and getting a deal for $99 from Missouri to Los Angeles instead of flying into Palm Springs directly. We have to spend some extra time in the car but the savings are worth it. My ex-husband is paying for the children and I am paying for my ticket. That brings my budget down to $700.

Presents for Friends

I normally spend around $500 on my close friends for Christmas. This year I want to spend around $100 for everyone. I'm making an assortment of homemade cookies and candies with recipes I found in Better Homes and Gardens. I found adorable candy dishes at the thrift store and ribbon at a local dollar store. I had enough left over after buying all of the supplies to make Christmas Cocoa for everyone as well. The total for everything was $97. That brings my budget down to $603.

The Children

My children want expensive gifts every year. This year my son wants Vanilla Speed Skates which are around $300 per pair. My daughter wants an iPad which is even more expensive. Neither of these will fit into my budget for Christmas. I can't just buy them one gift. After travel and friends I have approximately $300 to spend on each child. I found my son's speed skates on eBay for under $100 new, my daughter is getting a knock off version of an iPad from Wal-Mart for $179 and I still have $300 left to buy all of the cute little things they love.

It's been hard to fit a gift for everyone into my budget and still visit family, but I accomplished it by thinking outside of the box. I hope that everyone appreciates the love and hardwork I put into this Christmas.

Verizon pushes for quick Windows Phone / LTE integration, tugs at Microsoft's pant leg

There's no question that Verizon's making a big push for LTE, but it appears that Microsoft has yet to take notice -- after all, Android continues to dominate Big Red's 4G network, with nary a Windows Phone in sight. VZW hopes that'll change, however, with CMO Marni Walden revealing that the company has "communicated to Microsoft that LTE is critical to us," suggesting that the ball is in Windows Phone's court. Meanwhile, Microsoft smartphone chief Andy Lees had previously confirmed that LTE functionality was on the Windows Phone roadmap, saying back in October that the company and its partners were looking at how 4G LTE support could be integrated. To date, Lees has declined to give any indication as to the actual timing for the first LTE models. In other news, Verizon has offered Microsoft a custom-made promise ring just to make sure its intentions were understood.

Atlantic hurricane season closes with 19 named storms (The Christian Science Monitor)

The curtain has fallen on the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season ??? one that enters the record books in a four-way tie for the third-largest number of named storms on record.

The others: the 1887, 1995, and 2010 seasons.

Tropical Storm Arlene started things off in late June. By the time Nov. 30 arrived, the roster ended with 19 named storms, ending with Tropical Storm Sean in early November.

Indeed, the season might have topped 19 named storms, but forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami didn't catch a blink-and-you'll-miss-it storm in early September that quickly reached tropical-storm status, only to weaken hours later. It spent its brief life well off the US East Coast.

Forecasters noticed the storm as they performed their usual season's-end review of data on Atlantic-basin activity. The review also led to Tropical Storm Nate's promotion to Hurricane Nate.

Although the number of named storms was well above the long-term average of 11, the number of hurricanes and major hurricanes were only slightly above average, according to the center's post-season analysis.

RECOMMENDED: Five things you can do to keep safe in a hurricane

Still, for much of the US East Coast, it was a season to remember.

In late August, Hurricane Irene moved out of the eastern Caribbean and up along the US East Coast. It made landfall three times as it slid up along the East Coast: at Cape Lookout, N.C., at Little Egg Inlet, N.J., as a hurricane, and finally near Coney Island as a tropical storm.

The storm's winds and heavy rains assaulted a landscape along much of the coast and deep into New England whose trees were laden with leaves and whose roots were clinging to soils already saturated from previous rain storms. Storm-felled trees and limbs left 4 million customers without electricity.

From Maryland and Delaware through Maine, 10 states saw record flooding along rivers and streams from Irene's downpours, according to the US Geological Survey, which monitors stream flows.

"Irene broke the 'hurricane amnesia' that can develop when so much time lapses between land-falling storms," said National Weather Service director Jack Hayes in a statement.

All along its path from the Caribbean northward, Irene inflicted an estimated $10.1 billion in damage; the storm reportedly killed 56 people.

Tropical storm Arlene and tropical storm Lee added a combined 46 fatalities to a season that would reach $11.6 billion in damages throughout the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico, and 120 casualties.

The season also showcased the advances forecasters have made in providing local emergency managers with timely warnings. Still, efforts are underway to extend storm-track forecasts another two days beyond the current 5-day outlook while reducing the uncertainties in the forecast.

In addition, researchers have placed a heavy emphasis on understanding the drivers behind rapid changes in storm intensity. Last-minute shifts in strength, up or down, ahead of landfall can have a profound effect on the extent of coastline that needs evacuation.

The efforts are being driven in no small part by analyses showing that between 1900 and 2005, damage from landfalling tropical cyclones in the US doubles every 10 years. Costs are rising as more people move to vulnerable coastal areas, triggering the construction of homes, factories, office buildings, and other assets needed to sustain them.
