RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? A report given to a high-level advisory group in Saudi Arabia claims that allowing women in the kingdom to drive could encourage premarital sex, a rights activist said Saturday.

The ultraconservative stance suggests increasing pressure on King Abdullah to retain the kingdom's male-only driving rules despite international criticism.

Rights activist Waleed Abu Alkhair said the document by a well-known academic was sent to the all-male Shura Council, which advises the monarchy. The report by Kamal Subhi claims that allowing women to drive will threaten the country's traditions of virgin brides, he said. The suggestion is that driving will allow greater mixing of genders and could promote sex.

Saudi women have staged several protests defying the driving ban. The king has already promised some reforms, including allowing women to vote in municipal elections in 2015.

There was no official criticism or commentary on the scholar's views, and it was unclear whether they were solicited by the Shura Council or submitted independently. But social media sites were flooded with speculation that Saudi's traditional-minded clerics and others will fight hard against social changes suggested by the 87-year-old Abdullah.

Saudi's ruling family, which oversees Islam's holiest sites, draws its legitimacy from the backing of the kingdom's religious establishment, which follows a strict brand of Islam known as Wahhabism. While Abdullah has pushed for some changes on women's rights, he is cautious not to push too hard against the clerics.

In October, Saudi Arabia named a new heir to the throne, Prince Nayef, who is a former interior minister and considered to hold traditionalist views, although he had led crackdowns against suspected Islamic extremists. His selection appeared to embolden the ultraconservative clerics to challenge any sweeping social reforms.

Prince Nayef was picked following the death of Crown Prince Sultan.

Actos Bladder Cancer Statute of Limitations | InjuryBoard Fort Worth

The use of Actos, a popular diabetic drug, is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. If you have developed bladder cancer as a result of using the drug Actos, then you need to consider the time you have to file a lawsuit for the injuries you have suffered. The right to file a lawsuit is not indefinite and is time limited, this is known as the statute of limitations. You have a certain amount of time to file a personal injury lawsuit, or the claim will expire irrespective of how strong your case is.

In the United States, personal injury statute of limitations vary from the state to state. Most states have a statute of limitations that runs for two years after the date of the injury. But, it is hard to pin down the starting date of the injury. For example, did the injury occur when the patient first began taking Actos, or was it when the bladder cancer was first diagnosed, or when the victim first realised the link between the bladder cancer and Actos or when the patient had surgery for his bladder cancer?

Typically, the court rules that the statute of limitations starts when the victim should have known about the dangerous side effects of the drug. Sometimes the drug manufacturer makes a public announcement that their drug is causing side effects; then the plaintiff should know about the danger, starting the statute of limitations. Sometimes, the court rules that the statute of limitations begins after the Food and Drug Administration issues a warning about the danger of the drug or makes a "black box warning." At this point, the drug manufacturer?s dangerous drug is public knowledge. In the case of Actos, the FDA went public in June of 2011, and issued a warning.

In most drug injury cases, the victims may have been taking the dangerous drug for many years before the risk became known, for example Accutane and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Here, the court must extend the statute of limitations to the point at which the danger became public, or most of the people who are harmed will be excluded from claiming compensation.

Multi-District Litigation and Statutes of Limitations
The Court presiding over the representative cases (bellwether trials) will establish damages for all other cases. The jurisdiction for the representative cases was likely chosen for some specific reason, for example because it is the home jurisdiction of the defendant. While the damage caps, procedures, and rules of evidence will be those of jurisdiction handling the representative cases, the statute of limitations will be that of the jurisdiction in which the victim was injured; you retain the statute of limitations of your state, which is two years in Texas, three years in Arkansas etc. Click here to find out the Statute of Limitations in your jurisdiction.

Actos is a member of a class of drugs known as thiazolidinediones, which have been linked to bladder cancer. Dawn soars over asteroid Vesta in 3-D

ScienceDaily (Dec. 1, 2011) ? Glide over the giant asteroid Vesta with NASA's Dawn spacecraft in a new 3-D video. Dawn has been orbiting Vesta since July 15, obtaining high-resolution images of its bumpy, cratered surface and making other scientific measurements.

Best viewed with red-blue glasses, the video incorporates images from Dawn's framing camera from July to August 2011. It was created by Dawn team member Ralf Jaumann of the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

The images were obtained when Dawn was making its approach to Vesta, and while orbiting the giant asteroid in its first science orbit, known as survey orbit, at an altitude of about 1,700 miles (2,700 kilometers). The video begins with a global view of Vesta from the plane of its equator, where a mysterious band of linear ridges and troughs can be seen. The movie cuts to a flyover of young craters in the northern hemisphere, whose peculiar alignment has led some scientists to refer to them as the "snowman." Then this virtual tour of Vesta takes the viewer around a massive mountain at the south pole of Vesta that is about 16 miles (25 kilometers) high, or more than twice the height of Mt. Everest.

"If you want to know what it's like to explore a new world like Vesta, this new video gives everyone a chance to see it for themselves," Jaumann said. "Scientists are poring over these images to learn more about how the craters, hills, grooves and troughs we see were created."

Vesta is the second most massive object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Dawn is currently spiraling down to its low altitude mapping orbit, which will bring the spacecraft to about 130 miles (210 kilometers) above Vesta's surface.

"Dawn's data thus far have revealed the rugged topography and complex textures of the surface of Vesta, as can be seen in this video," said Carol Raymond, deputy principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "Soon, we'll add other pieces of the puzzle such as the chemical composition, interior structure, and geologic age to be able to write the history of this remnant protoplanet and its place in the early solar system."

Dawn launched in September 2007 and arrived at Vesta on July 15, 2011. Following a year at Vesta, the spacecraft will depart in July 2012 for the dwarf planet Ceres, where it will arrive in 2015.

Dawn's mission to Vesta and Ceres is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital Sciences Corp. in Dulles, Va., designed and built the spacecraft. The German Aerospace Center, the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, the Italian Space Agency and the Italian National Astrophysical Institute are international partners on the mission team.
